WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational Daily Fantasy Picks & Predictions: Picking Jordan Spieth At The Top
Nobody turns down a guaranteed payday. Such is the case this week as a good portion of the field takes the midnight train to Memphis after a long week in Tokyo at The Olympics. TPC Southwind is a familiar stop on the tour circuit, and a popular one at that. Beginning in 2019, the event was given World Golf Championship status which further strengthened the field and shifted to a no-cut style event with a massive purse.
Plenty of lengthy par 4’s and water-lined fairways generally keep the scoring at bay. The main stats that I am targeting this week are recent prowess in Ball Striking, Scrambling, Long Par 4 Scoring, and a bit of Course History. Let’s dive right into my favorite plays in each price range for the WGC Fedex St Jude this week!
2021 WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational Daily Fantasy Picks
$10,000 Range: Jordan Spieth @ $10,400
TPC Southwind has these rather unique, smallish greens for a course that stretches almost 7,300 yards and plays as a par 70. For me, that ratchets up the importance of approach play and scrambling. Spieth rates out 4th in Approach, 9th in scrambling, and 8th in scoring on par 4’s 450-500 yards. He is also no longer bleeding a ton of strokes off the tee with the driver which should allow him to setup much better for TPC Southwind than in years past. In his past 8 events, he has a 1st, 3rd, and two 2nd place finishes. Play Jordan!
$9,000 Range: Daniel Berger @ $9,200
He’s too cheap in this range given the current form coupled with his course history. Back-to-back wins in 2016-2017 at TPC Southwind should have him comfortable coming back to the honey-hole that vaulted his PGA Tour career. The tiny greens are right in Berger’s wheelhouse with wins at Pebble and Colonial which are also both well below tour average in size. He has leaned on his approach of late and something about this course routing clearly suits his eye. I expect to see him near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.
$8,000 Range: Abraham Ancer @ $8,300
Fairways and greens. That will go a long way any week, but even more so at TPC Southwind with all the water lurking. Abe is top 10 in both of those categories and is the 3rd best player in the field in Good Drives Gained vs. the field. 4 rounds in the 60’s over in Tokyo would also indicate solid current form. There is an argument that he doesn’t carry win equity, but at $8,300 a top 5 finish ceiling will be just fine!
$7,000 Range: Tyrrell Hatton @ $7,400
What are we doing here guys? I’m certain the ownership percentage will be quite high, but that’s not enough for me to ignore this egregious price on Hatton. We are getting the discount due to missed cuts at the past 2 Major Championships but let us not forget the 2nd place finish at Palmetto in June where he gained nearly 7 strokes on Approach. The results have been volatile, but well worth the gamble at this price with a missed cut out of play. If he putts it well, he can WIN.
$6,000 Range: Kevin Kisner @ $6,800
There are a ton of quality players and options in the 6k range this week. My favorite is Kisner. I trust his ability to get it in play off the tee. We didn’t have Strokes Gained data in his last start at The Open, but Kisner gained 17.5 strokes total in his previous two PGA Tour starts at The Travelers and Rocket Mortgage. He’s also 2nd in the field in Scrambling over the last 24 rounds which is huge as the irons tend to get loose from time to time. Kisner provides a safe option in this range to pair with your winner up top!
Have a great week friends and thanks for the read! See you next week at Wyndham which holds a special place in my heart and wallet!
