Charles Schwab Challenge Picks and Preview: Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler Headline the Field

Just hours removed from a playoff finish at the PGA Championship, in which we saw Justin Thomas come away victorious following a playoff with Will Zalatoris, we waste no time jumping directly into the next event. This week we will head back to Texas for the Charles Schwab Challenge (The Colonial National Invitation) just outside of Fort Worth for what should be a great week of highly competitive golf.

With just two more tournaments between this event and the next major (US Open), many of the world’s best will once again be on hand this week to sharpen their edge as another major approaches. Let’s take a closer look at the course itself, the field in totality, and see who has the value heading into the week.

Charles Schwab Challenge Course Preview: Colonial Country Club

A hair over 7,200 yards, Colonial will be a welcomed sight for players who lack the long ball, as last week’s PGA Championship at Southern Hills came in at just under 7,600 yards, well above the Tour’s average. Filled with dog legs as many Texas courses are, players who excel at approach shots do well here as the course sets up many in the 150-200 yard range.

Covered in pristine bermudagrass, the greens of choice at Colonial are Bentgrass, as we’ll take a closer look at players who excel on both surfaces.

Having hosted a PGA Tour event every year since 1946, Colonial is the longest-running non-major event held at the same venue on Tour. Because of that, every non-rookie in this week's field likely has some experience to draw off of which we’ll be taking a look at here.

Charles Schwab Challenge Prediction - Outright Pick

Kevin Na (+3500) (Bet $100 to win $3500)

*Odds available at DraftKings at time of publishing*

Turning in a T23 at the PGA Championship, Na turned in yet another solid performance in what has been an under-the-radar strong 2022 campaign thus far. Finishing atop the QBE Shootout in December, NA has raddled off five top 25s to start the calendar year, as his ball-striking has been strong throughout the season.

Firmly in the mix after in both majors following an opening-round 71 at the Masters and 68 at the PGA last week, Na now heads to a course in Fort Worth he has shown a mastery of. Winning here in 2019, Na holds the course record (with seven others), shooting a 61 on Sunday in 2018, days after an opening-round 62 on Thursday. With a total of 52 rounds under his belt, Na leads the pack this week in True Strokes Gained (+1.64) for players with more than 36 holes.

Currently No. 29 on Tour in SG: Approach (.472), Na also is No. 29 in Driving Accuracy (65.97%), two metrics critical for success here at Colonial. If Na can get the putter going, which he showed glimpses of last week at Southern Hills, this is great value for a player in Na who has all the tools for success at this course. Na has pretty good odds for the Charles Schwab Challenge.
