2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions Betting Preview, Field, and Picks

The PGA opens up the 2023 calendar year with back-to-back tournaments in Hawaii. This weekend features the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui from the 5th through the 8th, and then the Tour jumps to Honolulu, where the Sony Open in Hawaii takes place from the 12th through the 15th.

It’s a decorated field this weekend, including 17 of the world’s top 20 golfers. Let’s dive into the course and the field, and see where the potential value is from a betting standpoint.

Sentry Tournament of Champions Course Preview

THE PLANTATION COURSE AT KAPALUA GOLF

Click here for the latest PGA odds

There’s no shortage of views on this beautiful, lengthy 7,596-yard course located in Maui, Hawaii. The Plantation Course at Kapalua is a par 73, but it’s expected that pro players will come in several strokes under par courtesy of the spacious fairways and pedestrian greens. Per the course’s website, the single-round record is 61 set by a trio of golfers in Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, and Matt Jones. All three players shot their 61s in the 2022 tournament.

Last year, Cameron Smith shot 34 under par en route to a tournament victory and a $1,476,000 prize. His score of -34 is the lowest 72-hole score in Tour history. Smith is one of the three top-20 golfers not participating this weekend, the other two are No. 1 McIlroy and No. 20 Lowry.

Sentry Tournament of Champions Purse

This weekend’s event features a purse of $15,000,000; marking the highest purse thus far in the 2022-2023 PGA season, which won’t be topped until the Tour heads to Scottsdale, AZ next month ($20,000,000).

Sentry Tournament of Champions Preview

What will likely be suppressed into the abyss over time is that Jon Rahm shot a -33 in the 2022 edition of this event – one shot off the pace of Smith’s all-time PGA record. The Spaniard comes into this year’s tournament as the betting favorite at +800, while the trio of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Justin Thomas are all listed at +1000.

Personally, I don’t mind making a play on one of the favorites in Rahm, Thomas, or Schauffele as they’re each coming off of great seasons and have fared well at Kapalua in the past. Rahm is a two-time runner-up, Thomas has won the tournament twice, and Schauffele has a victory and a runner-up performance.

Sentry Tournament of Champions Prediction

If you’re looking for a slightly larger payout, my best bet is to ride with Collin Morikawa at +2000. The 25-year-old is coming off a noteworthy 2021-2022 campaign, posting top-five finishes at the Masters and the U.S. Open. Most recently, Morikawa placed sixth at the Hero World Challenge back in early December. Furthermore, the American always seems to be in the thick of things in Maui. Here’s where he finished at the Tournament of Champions in his last three appearances: T-5 (-25), T-7 (-20), and T-7 (-9). Let’s take a shot with Morikawa to start off his 2023 with an outright win.
