2023 Valspar Championship Preview, Field, and Picks
The PGA Tour remains in Florida for another week, this time making a stop at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club located in Palm Harbor. This year’s Valspar Championship sees a field featuring 10 of the world’s top 50 golfers, including five of the top 20.
Let’s dive into the course, discuss the purse, and get a bet locked in for the 22nd annual Valspar Championship.
2023 Valspar Championship Start Time, Where to Watch, and Odds
- Dates: March 16-19, 2023
- Where: Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club (Palm Harbor, Florida)
- Where to Watch: ESPN+, NBC, Golf Channel
2023 Valspar Championship Course
The Innisbrook features four golf courses on the resort property, with the Copperhead Course laying claim to this weekend’s event. It was completed in 1974, and the current dimensions measure 7,340 yards and play as a par 71.
Due to the length of Copperhead, ball striking will play a major role in this weekend’s event. The 7,340-yard layout actually plays longer than you’d think since there is an extra par three added to the mix. It essentially sees the rest of the holes stretch out to make up for the shortcomings of the added par three.
There’s a notable stretch to close out Copperhead, deservedly named the “Snake Pit.” It’s the final three holes that are regarded as one of the toughest stretches on the Tour. However, if golfers can hit their greens in regulation and finish their putts through the first 15 holes, they should be able to offset any mishaps in the Pit.
2023 Valspar Championship Purse
There’s a whopping $8,100,000 at stake this weekend in Tampa Bay, with the winner taking home his share of $1,458,000.
2023 Valspar Championship Preview
While some of the top players in the world are taking the weekend off, there are still plenty of notable names competing at the Valspar Championship. Sam Burns, the two-time defending champion, will play at the event. If Burns can notch another win, he’d be the only golfer to win the event three times.
Burns (14th) will be joined by another former winner, Jordan Spieth (15th), who secured a win in his breakout campaign of 2015. Meanwhile, three other top 20 players will tee it up this weekend, including Justin Thomas, Matthew Fitzpatrick (12th), and Keegan Bradley (20th).
Another five of the world’s top 50 competitors will also partake, including Tommy Fleetwood (26th), Brian Harman (27th), Justin Rose (37th), K.H. Lee (41st), and Kevin Kisner (45th). All things considered, it should be a thrilling weekend in northwest Tampa. And, with some of the big guns opting out, it opens the door for longshot players to step up and earn a victory.
2023 Valspar Championship Prediction
I’m locking in Keegan Bradley to win the Valspar Championship this weekend. Currently ranked 20th in the world, it’s been a feast-or-famine campaign for the 36-year-old American. He’s missed three cuts over his last six competitions but has sprinkled in a second-place finish at the Farmers, a T10 at the Arnold Palmer, and a T20 in Phoenix in between. Furthermore, Bradley won the ZOZO Championship back in October, a -15 performance that earned him $1,980,000.
Bradley hasn’t always fared well at Innisbrook, missing the cut in three of his last five events at the resort. However, he climbed all the way to a second-place finish in 2021, losing out to the above-mentioned Sam Burns by three strokes. Weirdly, it seems his play at the Copperhead course has been a microcosm of his play over the past year or so.
But, with Bradley finding some success at the course over the years, coupled with his recent form, I think it’s worth a shot to back the American to bring home a win this weekend.
