2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Preview, Field, and Picks

The PGA Tour will be in the lone star state this week. This 2023 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament will be the 24th time the event has been played. It was announced earlier this month that it would also be the final time for the unique 64-golfer match play tournament.

Let’s dive into the course at Austin Country Club, preview the format and golfers, and get a best bet locked in.

2023 WGC-DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY COURSE

The final running of the WGC will take place at Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas, for the seventh consecutive time this weekend. The course is a Pete Dye creation, and it plays as a par 72, stretching 7,108 yards.

As with the typical Pete Dye designs, golfers must bring their best game to navigate the tricky course. This specific course is often compared to what we see in Scotland, featuring rolling hills and deep bunkers. A trip to the sand can easily cost a competitor a stroke as there usually aren’t easy exits where you can shoot toward the hole, thanks to the depth.

However, it makes for an intriguing spin on this already eccentric event. In my opinion, it’s a shame that it’ll be the final time this event is played.

2023 WGC-DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY PURSE

The purse for this weekend’s match play event totals $20,000,000, with the outright winner taking home their share of $3,600,000.

2023 WGC-DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY PREVIEW

It’s imperative to know the format of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament if you plan on betting on the event. The top 64 players in the world, barring the “LIV Tour defectors,” are essentially divided into four pools. The top 16 each take their own group (1-16) and are joined by three randomly drawn competitors from the subsequent groups of 16 (17-32, 33-48, 49-64).

From here, the groups of four play each other head-to-head in a round-robin format, with the winner getting a point and ties counting for half a point. Whoever collects the most points advances to a traditional 16-person bracket. When it’s all said and done, the two finalists will play seven rounds of golf over five days (Wednesday-Sunday).

All of the big names will make the trip to Austin this weekend, including current No. 1 and defending champion Scottie Scheffler. The star golfer edged out Kevin Kisner last year after finishing runner-up in 2021.

Kisner will also be competing, and he’s won the event once (2019) while adding a pair of runner-up performances (2018, 2022). The duo will be joined by all the best golfers in the world, making this a most-watch event this weekend.

2023 WGC-DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY PREDICTION

It may be considered a chalky play, but I’m going to ride with Scottie Scheffler to win the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event this weekend.

Scheffler has been absolutely scorching over the last two years, and he hasn’t dropped off at all since we turned the calendar to 2023. The 26-year-old American is well-rested, taking a week off after winning THE PLAYERS outright two weekends ago (-17). It was already his second victory of 2023, notching a win at the WM Phoenix Open last month (-19).

As I alluded to above, the course history is on his side as well. Scheffler won the event outright last year and placed second the year prior. Let’s sit back and watch one of the betting favorites put on another memorable performance in front of his home crowd in Texas.
