Red-hot 'capper Chris Wassel picks his best bets for Sunday's hockey
ANALYSIS

The NHL features only three games on Sunday but that includes a couple late-night contests which should feature some last-minute shifts. With five of the six teams playing the night before, expect a lot of unexpected. Anyway, let’s get to work!

Here are Today’s NHL Picks:

Pittsburgh Penguins @ Winnipeg Jets

 - Pittsburgh and Winnipeg were somewhat surprising road winners yesterday on a night where quite a few road teams ended up in the win column.

The Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins have split their last four matchups. Also, while it would seem the over is an easy enough assumption, the under has hit the previous two contests. There are some other numbers to consider as well.  Pittsburgh has scored seven goals twice this season (against Columbus and Minnesota). Winnipeg has scored four or more goals on several occasions. This is a sludge matchup which means both teams played the night before. It is difficult to account for what may happen in game action, but mistakes are expected to be had on both sides. The only question is if extra goals will be scored. Laurent Brossoit starts for Winnipeg in net and Tristan Jarry may get the nod for Pittsburgh. Again, both teams played high-paced opponents on Saturday. How much gas do they have in the tank?

1u – Under 6.5 Total Goals @ +110

Calgary Flames @ San Jose Sharks

 - Calgary comes off a nasty 6-2 road loss on Saturday against Vegas to go up against a San Jose team that has lost four of five to start the season.

Calgary and San Jose have also split their previous four matchups with three of them easily connecting on the over. Goaltending has always been a question mark in these games and for San Jose it has been suspect all year. According to Statschecker, each of the last nine home games following a San Jose win have gone the over. Given that San Jose is playing a team on no rest in the Flames, that is little surprise. Martin Jones and Cam Talbot have been confirmed as the starting goalies for San Jose and Calgary respectively. Calgary does play well on Sundays – winning their last six games. However, the Sharks may have found a bit of their old selves on Thursday when they outlasted the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4. Patrick Marleau scored twice for the Sharks in the win. This is one to give San Jose a shot on as far as the moneyline and the over as well.

1u – San Jose Sharks ML @ -111, Over 6.5 Total Goals @ +135

Vegas Golden Knights @ Los Angeles Kings

 - Vegas tries to build a winning streak after a big division win over Calgary while Los Angeles tries to duplicate the win it pulled off against Nashville on Saturday evening.

This is one game that has trap written all over it. Statschecker mentions that Los Angeles has won six straight contests on Sunday and that the over has connected six consecutive times. Even the last meeting of 2018-19 saw the two teams combine for seven goals. It appears Jonathan Quick will go up against a non-rested Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury saw his goals-against-average rise by almost a full goal on the back end of back-to-backs last season. Quick has been a train wreck in his first two starts allowing six or more goals in both outings. Though the over of 6.5 total goals is intriguing and can be chosen, opting for the 5.5 is a bit safer on this night.

1u – Over 5.5 Total Goals @ -150, Los Angeles Kings ML @ +125
