Chris Wassel's picks for today's NHL action
ANALYSIS

The NHL features seven games on Tuesday night including some high-powered games in Montreal, Vegas, and even Calgary. Do not forget, there is the Toronto game against an unrested Minnesota team that loves to give up some goals. Let’s quickly get down to business.

Here are Today’s NHL Picks:

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Montreal Canadiens

- The Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens are hitting the over more this season than not, but Tampa has connected on five straight overs in night games.

The Montreal Canadiens have been scoring more goals in the early going this season. As a matter of fact, their over/under record is 4-0-1 which is better than Tampa’s 4-1 according to Statschecker. Montreal has been better against the spread with a 4-1 mark and Tampa Bay, who was so good as a favorite last year, is just 1-2-1 in that role this season. Montreal scores four goals a game and give up four goals a game. Tampa Bay also scores at a four goals per game clip while allowing 3.4 per contest. It may be early, but these are both teams that can light the lamp with some frequency. This has the look of the New Jersey-Florida game where goals were easily predictable.

1u – Over 6.5 Total Goals @ -111

Minnesota Wild @ Toronto Maple Leafs

- Minnesota fooled a lot of people yesterday but are on the back end of a back-to-back against a rested Toronto team.

The Minnesota Wild certainly do not make things dull. However, then there was yesterday. Minnesota and Ottawa forgot how to score. However, tonight they play in Toronto against another team who is light defensively but heavy on offense. The Maple Leafs score at four goals per game while yielding 3.5 goals per contest. Minnesota gives up 4.2 goals a night but none yesterday against Ottawa. That increases the risk a tiny fraction. Toronto is such a heavy favorite in this game that the spread Is the only palatable way to bet them. Even then, the odds are basically hovering around an even pick. Take the over one more time with a Toronto win by two goals or more.

1u – Over 6.5 Total Goals @ +105

1u – Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5 goals @ +120

Philadelphia Flyers @ Calgary Flames

- Calgary has had a rough start against the spread and with the over/under. They split at 3-3 for the over/under and are just 2-4 ATS on the year so far. Philadelphia is only 1-2 with the over/under.

This is one game that could be full of trap doors as far as betting. Calgary and Philadelphia have hit the over three of the last four games they have played each other. The only time it did not was during their previous meeting in Calgary (3-2 score). According to Statschecker, Calgary has won its last eight games against Metropolitan Division opponents and Philadelphia has seen the over connect the previous five times after a shootout. It is a bit dicey to ride the 5.5 over/under but most places could go around 6. The Flames are a better team than they have shown and their scoring chances per 60 is on the rise. Take the Flames moneyline and over while it carries some value.

1u – Calgary Flames ML @ -142

1u – Over 5.5 Total Goals @ -166

Nashville Predators @ Vegas Golden Knights

- Nashville loves scoring goals this year and giving them up as well. Vegas has been a little less certain, but the Predators have gone an eye-popping 5-0 on the over/under.

The finale of this seven-game slate expects to feature yet more offense. Nashville gives as good as they get as a lot of their games turn into high-paced and high-scoring affairs. The Predators’ second line scores plenty but the rest of their lines give up almost a 45-scoring chance per 60 pace. So, Vegas has been 4-2 on the moneyline this year but average elsewhere. Nashville got smoked in its only road game of the year. There is plenty of risk but hitting on the over and Vegas to win is where we put our chips on the table this Tuesday night.

1u – Vegas Golden Knights ML @ -133

1u - Over 6.5 Total Goals @ +140
