The NHL features five evening games on the night schedule (seven overall). Today’s goal is to continue to keep the picks clean and simple. Let’s dig in!

Here are Today’s NHL Picks:

Los Angeles Kings @ Chicago Blackhawks

  • Chicago is struggling to score goals and so is Los Angeles on the road in what shapes up to be a sludge matchup.

What is a sludge matchup?  Simply, it is when both teams are not rested. Statschecker feeds into this a little bit. Chicago has hit the under in its last five games following a loss. It does seem like the days of the Chicago first period and game over are gone for now. The under has connected six times in Chicago’s nine contests. The Blackhawks lost 4-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes yesterday while Los Angeles dropped a 5-1 decision to the Minnesota Wild. Both teams may try to play a bit more conservatively. It is easier to take the under at 6.5.

1u – Under 6.5 Total Goals @ -120

Boston Bruins @ New York Rangers

  • New York surprisingly took two of three meetings against the Boston Bruins – including the only game played at Madison Square Garden.

Boston found a way to defeat St. Louis 3-0 on Saturday night and travelled down the turnpike to New York City so they can face the Rangers on Sunday evening. Boston is a league-best 7-1-2 on the moneyline. Things turn murkier when it comes to the spread (6-4) and the over/under (5-5). The wildcard is the Rangers as they have lost five straight games. Lines have been rearranged a few times now and getting a gauge of what their team looks like has been difficult. Boston has won eight straight contests against the Metropolitan Division and five of those tilts were on the road. Our pick is the Bruins moneyline.

1u – Boston Bruins ML @ -166

San Jose Sharks @ Ottawa Senators

  • Ottawa has the worst moneyline (2-7-1) and is under.500 at home as well as they welcome the San Jose Sharks Sunday night.

Statschecker tells us that Ottawa has seen the under hit in four straight Sunday games and the Senators have lost six straight games on Sunday. Both teams are one in the same in some ways. San Jose has struggled with the spread and the over/under in October. When one sees a lot of under .500 numbers, there are some significant red flags. Those red flags become even redder with Ottawa, however. San Jose is in better form – going 3-1-1 in their previous five contests. The offense has picked up by about ¾ of a goal a game. That is just enough to side with a slightly unpopular pick – the San Jose moneyline.

1u – San Jose Sharks ML @ -162

Anaheim Ducks @ Vegas Golden Knights

  • The Vegas Golden Knights have defeated the Anaheim Ducks in seven of their eight meetings during their existence.

This game pits a rested Vegas team that has been stewing versus an Anaheim team that pulled off a surprise 4-2 win in Colorado on Saturday night. What will Anaheim have left in the tank? Not only has Vegas enjoyed a lot of success against Anaheim in their history, they have won by more than one goal in five of those contests. Vegas has won three of their last five games. However, the biggest stat is this. The Anaheim Ducks have lost five straight games following a road win by a margin of 12 goals. That is 2.4 goals per loss. Let’s take Vegas with the spread.

1u – Vegas Golden Knights -1.5 goals @ +125
