NHL expert Chris Wassel's picks for today's hockey action
ANALYSIS

The NHL bestows upon us a six-game slate on Wednesday night. Let’s take a fast look at what catches our eye on this night.

Here are Today’s NHL Picks:

Minnesota Wild @ St. Louis Blues

  • Minnesota had a 3-0 lead last night in Dallas and still wound up losing 6-3 behind a late second-period goal and a furious five-goal rally by the Stars in the third period.

There was this thought that maybe Minnesota had gotten past its early season struggles. That was quickly debunked! Worse for Minnesota, they play a rested St. Louis team looking to get back on track. The Blues did win their last game and are 3-1-2 at home overall. Minnesota is 1-7 on the road. Another variable with the lack of rest may be the lack of goals. This matchup itself is 0-3-1 over the previous four games when it comes to the over. The St. Louis moneyline is a lofty price, so look to take the value on the under.

1u – Under 5.5 Total Goals @ -113

Florida Panthers @ Colorado Avalanche

  • The over hit in both matchups last year between Florida and Colorado with a combined 16 goals between the two teams (eight per game) according to Statschecker.

Florida has been yielding goals in bunches on this road trip. That included seven goals in Vancouver and six goals in Calgary. Even in Edmonton, the over hit as well. These are two of the best teams when it comes to the over (Colorado is 8-3 and Florida is 8-3-1). Those records rank first and fourth in the NHL respectively. Colorado does have injuries (Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog are out), but their depth is more than capable of scoring goals. Then, there is Nathan MacKinnon of course. Florida has balanced scoring up and down their lineup and scores at a 3.6 goals per game clip. Colorado averages four goals per outing. Take the over.

1u – Over 6.5 Total Goals @ +130

Montreal Canadiens at Arizona Coyotes

  • Montreal swept Arizona in the season series last year but a lot has changed this season as the Coyotes have gotten off to a hot start behind a defense ranked second in the NHL in goals allowed at 2.18 per game.

Montreal has struggled in road games going back to last season. The Canadiens have dropped 11 consecutive decisions away from home. Arizona has been an underdog in all but two games this year. Guess what their record is? That’s right. The Coyotes are 2-0. Darcy Kuemper expects to face Carey Price in net. Price has been a bit of a mixed bag in October. This game does set up interesting as Montreal is 8-3 against the spread but Arizona is 9-2. That is part of the reason why the odds are not as tilted toward the Coyotes as one would expect. Therefore, value exists to pick Arizona on the moneyline being a very slight favorite.

1u – Arizona Coyotes ML @ -125

Vancouver Canucks @ Los Angeles Kings

  • The Vancouver Canucks have crossed the over line in four straight games according to Statschecker.

This game pits two teams that can score some goals not getting a line one would necessarily expect. Two of the previous three contests have gone over and Los Angeles has revenge on its mind. Just three weeks ago, Vancouver routed Los Angeles 8-2 in a game where Jonathan Quick completely unravelled. Los Angles is 7-4-1 versus the over and has connected on four of the previous six contests at home. Let’s ride the over.

1u – Over 5.5 Total Goals @ -137
