NHL expert Chris Wassel's picks for today's hockey action
ANALYSIS

The NHL comes back at us with five games on Wednesday night. It is time to get moving and try to rake in more cash!

Here are Today’s NHL Picks:

Ottawa Senators @ New Jersey Devils

- Seven of New Jersey’s last eight home games have hit the over. (Statschecker).

The New Jersey Devils come off a 3-2 road trip that ended with a 2-1 win in Vancouver of all places. Now, Vancouver may have been an aberration since both teams combined for just four goals in their two meetings. Either way, they face an Ottawa team that just allowed a snowman (eight goals). Ottawa has also lost eight of their last nine road games while yielding around four goals a contest. New Jersey does tend to play looser than most teams at home. They give up 3.75 goals per game themselves. It may not matter who is in net. This game is either a shootout or a 2-1 snoozer. There is little in between here. The gamble in taking the over is worth it in this case given the plus number.

1u – Over 6.5 Total Goals @ +130

Toronto Maple Leafs @ New York Islanders

- The New York Islanders have won their last seven games against the Atlantic Division.

Also, there is a level of innate revenge still on the minds of the New York Islanders and it has little to do with John Tavares but more with the subsequent back and forth between Toronto and New York media. This gives a rivalry life. The Islanders have taken two of the three previous meetings but lost the last one 2-1 on April Fool’s Day at home. This game will be played at the Nassau Colosseum and it will be a different atmosphere than Barclays Center. Expect a higher-event game than usual for the Islanders as they inevitably try to make a statement against the Maple Leafs. Toronto gives up 3.43 goals per game on the road and more than 34 shots per 60 as well. Their penalty kill is 26th away from home. Take in the atmosphere and an Islanders win as well with the value number.

1u – New York Islanders ML @ -120

Washington Capitals @ Philadelphia Flyers

- The Washington Capitals have connected on 12 of their last 13 contests when it comes to hitting the over. (Statschecker).

Both teams have been in excellent form of late as they each have won four of their last five games. Also, three of the previous four meetings have hit the over including the last two in Philadelphia. Both teams have only lost in this span in overtime and one other plus is that Philadelphia has seen extra time in four of these games too. What one is basically is hoping for is a 3-3 outcome that heads into overtime. The likelihood of that is higher here than compared to any other game on the five-game slate. Braden Holtby is confirmed in net for Washington and he should go up against Carter Hart. Both goalies have been capable of allowing 3+ goals with ease at times. There is some risk but Washington’s top ranked offense (four goals per game and 12.9% shooting percentage) usually do not take nights off.

1u – Over 6.5 Total Goals @ +110
