The Boston Bruins travel to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers. Matt O'Leary shares why he values the over tonight in this matchup.

Flyers vs Bruins Picks: Good Value On The Over

The NHL season has been underway for a week already, and somehow the Boston Bruins only have one game under their belt. They looked steady in their home opener against Dallas winning 3-1 and limiting the Stars to just three high danger chances for the game.

As for Philadelphia, they’ve gotten two very different performances. Against Vancouver, in the opener, they lost 5-4 in a shootout and then followed that up with a 6-1 dominant effort over the Seattle Kraken on Monday night.

Tonight, there are three plays from this game that caught my attention. Let’s take a closer look at this Philadelphia Flyers vs Boston Bruins contest.

Over 5.5 goals (-119)

Last year, both Boston and Philadelphia were top half in the league in goals for. When looking at Boston, obviously the perfection line carries them but with the depth of Taylor Hall, they aren’t just a one-trick pony anymore.

Philadelphia was a defensive nightmare last year as they let in the most goals in the league. Obviously, they’ve made some major changes like trading for Ryan Ellis and Rasmus Ristolainen but there’s no guarantee that it’s going to fix their issues.

Both of these teams can score, and the Flyers *might* still have a defensive issue. Also, the Flyers will be starting Martin Jones who has been downright bad for three years straight.

Bruins Over 3.5 goals (+150)

Going off the play in net thing we were just talking about, I don’t trust Martin Jones. Apparently, the Flyers don’t trust Carter Hart more (in his career against Boston, Hart has a 4-4-2 record with an .879 save percentage and a 3.74 goals against).

Over the last three years in San Jose, Jones has put forward a save percentage of .896 each year. This past year, the goals against average ballooned p to 3.28 goals against. I guess it’s a better alternative than running Hart out there but by how much?

Bruins ML (-132)

In their last five meetings in Philadelphia, Boston is 4-1 straight up. On paper they’re the better team, they haven’t played since Saturday, and on top of that, they have the better goalie in Jeremy Swayman.

Swayman picked up where he left off last year with Boston and now in 11 career starts he has a .946 save percentage and a 2.45 goals against average. He’s given us no reason to believe that he won’t be able to continue his dominance in net.
