Colorado Avalanche vs Philadelphia Flyers Prediction

In the beginning of the year, the Colorado Avalanche were the favorite to win the Stanley Cup. We understand why with their high-powered offense, they lead the league in goals per game. They still do currently lead the NHL in scoring averaging 4 goals a game (4.6 in their last 15 games). The Avalanche are off of an 11 goal game where they ended up losing 6-5 in overtime.

Clearly, they are not in a mood to lose another game tonight to an inferior opponent (Ottawa had 5 wins before they beat them). The problem has been their defense. They are 26th out of 32 in the league giving up over 3.4 goals a game. Last week they lost their goalie Darcy Kuemper. Their new goaltender is Jonas Johansson who is giving up 3.91 goals and has a .879 save percentage over the small sample of games he has goaltended this year (8 total). Side note Nazem Kadri is listed as probable for Colorado tonight and he is of course their leading scorer.

What can we say about the Flyers they have lost 8 in a row and they are in a funk, they fired their coach (Alain Vigneault and an assistant coach today) and they are playing back to back against the two time defending Stanley Cup champions (Lightning losing 7-1) and the number one offense (Colorado) does not make things any easier for them tonight.

In gambling we use the word tilt, well that’s what Philadelphia’s on as they are in all kinds of trouble, and new coaches won't help their offense as they are 28th in the league averaging only 2.32 goals per game. Their offense obviously is bad but their defense is what has been really disgusting (bottom 10 in just about everything especially shots per game where they are 29th giving up over 34 a game), when you are playing the best offense and your defense is bad that equals goals.

The numbers don’t lie here tonight. Colorado has also gone over nine out of their last 12 games with one being a push. If you go even further back they have gone over 20 out of their last 30 games with two being a push. The goaltender for Philadelphia tonight is Martin Jones, he gave up two goals on 12 shots in the last game versus Tampa Bay when they scored seven goals so he wasn’t much better in relief and Martin Jones has given up four goals in three of his last four starts.

The Avalanche are 6-1 over the last seven versus the Eastern Conference and Philadelphia is over the last four at home. All this leads to one thing and one thing only. GOALLLLLLLL. That's right, expect at least eight goals tonight as Philadelphia will be motivated with their new coach and Colorado will be mad after their loss to the awful Senators.
