Blackhawks vs. Capitals Prediction

Rodney Dangerfield said it best “I get no respect.” Unfortunately, that’s what is happening to the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. When you start the season 1-11, people have formed an opinion already about this team (that they suck), and that is the problem with sports and why we are getting tremendous dog value with Chicago tonight. The Blackhawks fired coach Jeremy Colliton back on November 6th, and guess what? Sometimes, a change is all you need. That change has lit a spark in Chicago, and this team under coach Derek King is 9-6 and in the last ten games has won four times as a pretty decent size underdog (+130, +135, +135, and +170 nice payouts).

So, as we repeat it, “no respect “ for the Blackhawks because people have in their minds the awful start and haven’t moved on yet, and this is why we are getting tremendous value tonight with Chicago. You don’t just win a game because of value, so why will the Blackhawks win.

Three words Marc Andre Fleury. Would you believe this man hasn’t had a losing season since 2005-2006? He is a three-time Stanley Cup Champ and one of the best goalies ever. And ever since Coach King took over, he has played it like going 7-3 and lowering his goals-against from 4.11 to 2.79 (1.32 drop is amazing). Also, he is coming off a shutout, and he has a 1.98 GAA in his last eight games and a .934 save percentage. If you watch or follow NHL, you damn well know a hot goalie in the playoffs; it doesn’t matter who is out there that goalie isn’t letting anything get past him.

There is a lot of talk that Backstrom might be back tonight and Dowd and Van Riemsdyk off of the Covid list as they still have two more guys out on that list, but if they do play, we say so what because getting them back into the flow might hurt the Capitals. The Capitals will always be Ovechkin’s team as long as he is there. The team goes the way he goes, and right now, the Capitals aren’t impressing us as 0-10 on power plays (25th in the league -16.5%) the last few games and 2.83 goals scored while giving up 3 goals a game isn’t going to win you many games.

We mentioned the spark when the Blackhawks fired their coach. We feel the opposite has happened since Washington blew the game against Florida. In December, they have not been the same team, which includes a 4-3 shootout loss to these same Blackhawks. That game was as even as a game can be, and that was in Washington. Now we come back home with a hot goalie, and they are giving us almost as much value as they had in Washington. We have decided we can’t pass up the value, the hot goalie, and a Blackhawks team that has been better than Florida with their new coach. Who would have thought that after the way both teams started? We won’t throw numbers out, but how about the fact the Blackhawks have alternated wins and losses their last ten games. Guess which way they are supposed to go tonight? W, of course, so let’s take the generous +140 and see if the Blackhawks and their goalie can do it again in December. Take the plus-money juice, get the win and let’s celebrate a 3-2 Blackhawks win together.
