Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Chicago Blackhawks Prediction

Both the Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets enter tonight’s contest in Ohio on the outside of the playoff bubble. With the off-season additions of Seth Jones and Marc-Andre Fluery, many expected the Blackhawks to be better and contend for a playoff spot, but that has not been the case. Chicago’s 29 points are 3rd worst in the West, only to Arizona and the expansion Seattle Kraken. Chicago has not been able to keep the puck out of their own net, as they average 3.40 goals against per game. On the road, it hasn’t been much better as they average 3.53 goals against.

Overall, the Hawks have struggled to score as their 2.29 goals per game average is 4th worst in the league, which goes down to 2.26 on the road. However, Chicago has increased their scoring over the last 10 games, averaging 2.70 goals per game. The Hawks are also 11-6 to the over on the road this season.

The Blue Jackets are currently 7 points out of the last wild card spot in the East. Surprisingly, they have continued to score goals despite missing Patrick Laine for most of the season. They are averaging 3.12 goals per game, and at home, that number increases to 3.53. Defensively, they have been an absolute mess, averaging 3.53 goals against per game overall, and 3.06 goals against at home where the overs are 12-5. Columbus is also giving up 34.8 shots per game which is the 2nd most in the NHL.

Goaltending has also been an issue for both teams. Aside from Columbus’ 3rd goalie Daniil Tarasov, who has only played 4 games and is in IR, no goaltender in this match-up has a save percentage above .910. Both teams also have bottom ten penalty kills, which is a good thing for 2 struggling power plays. These teams were division rivals last year, so we could see some extra animosity tonight leading to power play opportunities. In the 4 meetings in Columbus last season, the over was 3-1 and we saw an average of 6.75 goals per game. I see plenty of goals tonight and like the value of the over 6 at plus money, as both teams are capable of scoring 3 goals.
