Detroit Red Wings vs. Buffalo Sabres Prediction

The Detroit Red Wings enter tonight’s home bout with the Buffalo Sabres having lost 4 in a row, and 6 of their last 7. They returned home from a West Coast road trip on Thursday and were shut out 3-0 by the Winnipeg Jets, a game that saw the Red Wings put 33 shots on net. At home this season, the Red Wings are averaging 29.6 shots on goal per game. Detroit has played Buffalo twice this season and notched 2 overtime wins, one at home, and one on the road. In those two games, the Red Wings had shot totals of 33 and 41.

The Buffalo Sabres are coming off a surprising 4-1 win at Nashville on Thursday night, a game that saw the Sabres give up 30 shots on net. On the road this season, the Sabres are giving up 36.5 shots per game, which is 2nd most in the league. The Sabres are a disciplined team as their 7.4 penalty minutes per game is the 7th least in the league. Usually, on a shot on goal prop, I like to target teams that take penalties, but I’ll get into why I don’t mind this stat.

Red Wings left winger Tyler Bertuzzi is having a fine season as he leads Detroit with 17 goals and is third in points with 28. His 75 shots on goal are tied for 4th on the team, and he has attempted 114 shots equaling a shot rate of 66%. In the two previous games against the Sabres, Tyler registered shots on goal of 3 and 8. As I touched on earlier, the Sabres don’t take too many penalties, which I am ok with because five on five Buffalo has given up 997 shots, 3rd most in the league. The Sabres also don’t block many shots, as their 411 blocks are 4th least in the league. Finally, the Sabres are giving up a league-high 9.76 shots per game to left-wingers on the road this season. The Red Wings will be hungry to snap their losing streak tonight and Bertuzzi should lead that charge.
