Philadelphia Flyers vs. Dallas Stars Prediction

The Philadelphia Flyers (13-20-8) are watching their season collapse before their eyes. They have lost their last 11 contests, the second time this season that they've lost 10 or more consecutive games. Philly's last four losses have all come to non-playoff teams, the most embarrassing of which was a 6-3 loss to the lowly Sabres on Saturday. It won't come any easier for them, as they are missing multiple key players due to injury. Namely, Sean Couturier, Joel Farabee, and Ryan Ellis are three top players whom the Flyers will not have for this game.

Philly will play host to the Dallas Stars (20-16-2) on Monday night. This will be the third game on a four game road trip for Dallas; they won the first two against Buffalo and Detroit. The Stars currently sit two points out of a playoff spot, but hold four games in hand over the Sharks, who hold the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference. Dallas will look to stack points against a reeling opponent in Philadelphia.

The goaltending matchup in this game should be relatively even, with each team rolling out a mediocre starter. The expected matchup is Braden Holtby vs. Carter Hart, both of whom sit around league average in terms of GSAx. It is worth noting that neither of these goaltenders is in particularly good form. Holtby allowed four goals on 28 shots in his last outing; Hart allowed two goals on 16 shots in his, which came in relief of Martin Jones. The over could hold some strong value in this spot.

The Stars will look to capitalize on a sizeable special teams advantage. Specifically, their power play ranks fourth in the NHL by virtue of converting 27% of their opportunities. The Flyers' penalty kill, by contrast, ranks 21st in the league by kill rate. The Flyers may find themselves in trouble if they cannot stay out of the penalty box.

These two teams are not particularly close in terms of their even strength on-ice results this season. Dallas ranks 14th in the NHL with an expected goals share of 50.89%, while the Flyers rank 29th with an abysmal share of 44.68%. The Stars are also much healthier, and have far better special teams. If they perform up to their ability (not a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination), they should take this one handily.
