Washington Capitals vs. Las Vegas Golden Knights Prediction

The Vegas Golden Knights have battled injuries all season long but are holding steady in the Pacific Division. They are in 1st place with a 24-15-2 record, good for 50 points. Due to NHL schedule shuffling, Vegas will see the road tonight for the first time since Dec 28th.

The Washington Capitals have also battled injuries all season long. The Capitals are currently 4th in the Metropolitan division with 23-10-9 record, good for 55 points. Sniper Alexander Ovechkin has kept them afloat. Ovie is the MVP front runner as he leads the NHL with 29 goals, and is also tied for the league lead in points with 58. Since the turn of the calendar, the Caps have struggled. In January, they have a record of 3-5-1 and have had issues keeping the puck out of their own net, which I’ll get into.

In 16 road games this season, Vegas is averaging 3.69 goals per game, which is 2nd in the league. Their road power play is clicking at a 27.8 clip, which is 3rd in the league. Vegas has scored at least 3 goals in 12 of their 16 road games including each of their last 9. The Knights also have no problem scoring goals five on five as their 98 goals are 3rd in the NHL.

The Caps have had issues defending lately as they are giving up 3.3 goals per game in January. At home this season the Capitals are averaging 2.82 goals against per game. They have given up 3 or more goals in 15 of 22 home games and 12 of their last 14. Washington’s penalty kill is a solid 84.2 percent but they have given up 5 power-play goals in their last 5 home games. The Caps have not announced their starting goaltender for tonight but both Ilya Samsonov ( 2.77 GAA, .903SV%) and Vitek Vanecek (2.54 GAA, .909 Sv%) have struggled this season. I like the Golden Knights to light the lamp often in the Nation’s capital tonight.
