St. Louis Blues vs. Calgary Flames Prediction
The Calgary Flames visit the St. Louis Blues tonight coming off a 6-0 win at Columbus last night. Calgary fired a franchise record 62 shots on goal, as they peppered the Blue Jackets all night long. The Flames have won 3 of their last 4 games, and have scored 21 goals in that span, so their offense is obviously clicking right now. Calgary has a record of 20-12-6 this season, good for 4th in the Pacific with 46 points. The Flames currently hold the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference but are only 2 points behind the Kings in the division with plenty of games in hand. The Flames are led offensively by Johnny Gaudreau, who leads the team with 35 assists and 51 points. Matthew Tkachuk is on pace for a career season as his team-leading 20 goals compliments Johnny Hockey nicely.
The St. Louis Blues are home after a quick, three-game Western trip that saw them win at Vancouver and Seattle. They lost their last game of that trip, a 7-1 blowout to these same Flames. On the season the Blues have a record of 25-12-5 for 55 points, which is 3rd in the very competitive Central Division. The Blues have battled injuries all season as David Perron and Brayden Schenn, two key offensive contributors have both missed a number of games. The one constant has been youngster Jordan Kyrou who leads the team with 16 goals, 25 assists, and 41 points. Kyrou has brought another element of speed and finesse to a Blues team that really needed it. Despite requesting a trade in the off-season, star Vladimir Tarasenko is having a fine season as he is 2nd on the team with 38 points.
The Flames, on the road this season, are averaging 3.42 goals per game (4th most) and their power play is clicking at 23.4% (9th highest). Calgary has also scored a league-leading 56 five on five goals on the road this season. After last night, the Flames are also leading the NHL with a 36.1 shot per game average on the road. The Flames have generated 214 high danger scoring chances in their road game which is 2nd most in the NHL. Since the COVID break, the Flames are averaging 3.3 goals per game on the road and allowing 5.2 goals per game. Starting goaltender Jacob Markstom went last night so there is a good chance we see backup Dan Vladar tonight who has given up 17 goals in his last 4 starts.
At home this season, the St. Louis Blues are averaging 3.82 goals per game (4th most) with a power play percentage of 28.3 (6th highest). The Blues have scored 58 five on five goals at home which is the 5th most in the league. They are not generating many high danger scoring chances at home, as their 175 rank 19th but the Blues are burying the chances they do get. Since the break, the Blues are averaging 3.8 goals per game at home while allowing 2.3. Yes, both teams have solid defenses but with the Blues coming off a 7-1 loss to the Flames in Calgary on Monday, I expect St. Louis to be ready for this game as they look for some payback. Calgary, despite being on a back to back, should have no issues keeping pace with St. Louis as last night's game was relatively stress free.
