New Jersey Devils vs Ottawa Senators Prediction: Don't Expect an Offensive Explosion

Tonight, two teams that will not be in playoff contention at the end of the season faceoff when the Devils visit the Senators. The Devils are currently 15-25-5 with 35 points which is last in the Metropolitan Division. The Ottawa Senators have a record of 14-22-4 for 32 points which is 7th in the Atlantic Division. These teams met earlier in the season, a 3-2 Ottawa win in New Jersey on December 6th.

New Jersey Devils vs Ottawa Senators Prediction

At first glance, you would think this could be a high scoring game. Both teams are bottom 8 in goals against. New Jersey is 4th worst at 3.53 goals against per game and Ottawa is 8th worst at 3.35 goals against per game. Let’s look at goal scoring, especially recently. Both teams are bottom 12 in goals per game, New Jersey is 2.78 goals per game and Ottawa is 11th at 2.73 goals per game. Both these teams also are missing major offensive players. The Devils have been without defenseman Dougie Hamilton since January 2nd, and star forward and All-Star Jack Hughes was placed in Covid protocol yesterday. These are two major offers he pieces to the Devils lineup. The Senators are also without impactful offensive players. Winger Drake Batherson has missed the last 4 games with an ankle injury, and Center Josh Norris has missed the last 3 games with a shoulder injury. Over the last 5 games, the Senators are averaging only 2.4 goals per game and averaging 2.2 goals against. Over their last 5 games, the Devils are averaging 1.8 goals per game but 4.6 goals against. The Devils faced a talented Toronto offensive twice in that span and gave up 13 goals. I expect a slow, sluggish game with two struggling offense tonight. I typically don’t play unders but this number is a bit inflated.
