Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Islanders Best Bet: Look For This One to Sneak Over in Edmonton

I love goals.

I said it in my first article, but I will say it again for anyone who missed it. I have found a lot of success handicapping hockey games this season specifically looking for what I find to be the most predictable part of the game: goals being scored.

Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Islanders Prediction

The Islanders are usually a team I stay away from because I find them to be one of the more unpredictable teams in the league, especially regarding totals/goals scored. Tonight, it’s less about the history and more about what these two teams are doing right now.

The Islanders scored five goals in the first period Wednesday night in Vancouver and walked away with a 6-3 Victory. For a New York team that is below the .500 mark on the road this season, this is a good spot to walk into Edmonton and capitalize on two things: their momentum and Edmonton being out of sync.

The Islanders tend to do a bit more on the road, most good clubs do. When you aren’t in your house you don’t have the home ice advantage so the crowd and guy working the speakers is not there to set the tone for you, you do it yourselves. I expect them to push the pace here again against a fragile Oilers squad.

They went ice cold in December leaving the month with 3-8. They did pick things back up for a minute in January, however, after dropping back-to-back games out of the All-Star break this week Oilers management decided it was time to shake things up.

On Thursday they fired head coach Dave Tippett. This is the first game for Edmonton under new head coach Jay Woodcroft and I am really hoping they shake some things up in the locker room and get their mojo going again.

The Oilers have fallen off the rails and are dangerously close to losing a grip on the season, but there is hope. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are two of the best players in the league and are the best players on the Ice anytime they’re on it.

Their presence on the ice alone gives this offensive unit the opportunity to be lethal every time they take the ice, there is no other way to say it. Things have been off, but this is a good opportunity for them to find a turning point and break what seems to be a mental block here before it is too late.

Obviously, the Islanders have Sorokin and a tendency to go under but lately. they have gone both ways and with a struggling Mike Smith in net for Edmonton and the coaching change, I love the potential for fireworks early.

Edmonton is 8-2 across their L10 first period over 1.5’s with New York Right behind them at 7-3 L10.

I am not backing a side here, but I expect both teams to push the pace early and think the books are giving us great value based on what we know heading into this matchup. Best of luck to all who tail and as always, let's rip!
