Flyers vs. Oilers Prediction

The Edmonton Oilers continue their 5 game road trip tonight as they visit the Philadelphia Flyers. The Oilers are 1-2 on this trip having defeated the Panthers and suffering losses to Tampa Bay and Carolina. Since the hiring of Jay Woodcroft, the Oilers are 6-3 and have jumped back into playoff contention. Edmonton currently is tied for the last wildcard spot in the West with Dallas. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are carrying the load as they are both in the top 3 in the league in points. Evander Kane has been a nice addition and has given the Oilers some depth. Kane has recorded 10 points in 14 games (5G, 5A).

The Philadelphia Flyers are playing out yet another disappointing season. Philly is 8th in the Atlantic with only 42 points. Captain Claude Giroux will most likely be traded by the deadline as well as other veterans such as Justin Braun and Rasmus Ristolainen. The Flyers are coming off a spirited, 2-1 vs Washington at home on Saturday afternoon. Carter Hart, who has been solid this season, recorded 27 saves in the win.

In the 9 games under Woodcroft, the Oilers are averaging 3.7 goals per game and allowing 2.8 goals per game. They have scored 6 power play goals in that span on a 21.4% conversion rate, but their penalty kill has continued to struggle as they have given up 9 power play goals in the 9 games. In five on five situations under Woodcroft, the Oilers have a +9 goal differential and have generated 93 high danger scoring chances, which leads the league during this timeframe.

Over their last 10 games, the Flyers are averaging 2.8 goals per game and allowing 3.7, they have had a scoring uptick but their defense has continued to struggle. Their Power play is a minuscule 6.7% during that time and their Penalty Kill is 69.2%. This does not match up well with an Oiler Power play which is a 4th best 25.4% on the road this season.

This is the second meeting this season between these teams. The Flyers handed Edmonton their first loss of the season, a 5-3 win in Edmonton in early October. I expect Mikko Koskinen to go for the Oilers, he is coming off a very impressive 44 save performance on Saturday afternoon in Florida. Mike Smith started in Sunday's 2-1 loss at Carolina. I expect the Oilers to bounce back and get a win tonight against a bad Philadelphia team.
