New Jersey travels into the Garden to take on the New York Rangers. What's the play from this game between the local rivals?
ANALYSIS

New Jersey Devils vs New York Rangers Prediction: Finding Value on the Over

It’s the Battle of the Hudson tonight, as the New Jersey Devils face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers have beaten the Devils in seven consecutive games, including a 4-3 win earlier this season. While the Rangers should get the win, to do so they’ll need to either hyper-focus on their defense, or they could shift their aim towards the offensive advantage they have with NJ’s weak defense and goaltenders. Tonight, I assume we see the latter.

New Jersey Devils vs New York Rangers Prediction

The Rangers showcased what they are capable of offensively, but also highlighted some of their weakness in their game versus the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. After gaining a 2-0 lead, the Rangers and Shesterkin allowed the Blues three goals in only two minutes at the end of the second period. Despite this setback, the Rangers quickly rallied in the third to score three of their own goals and get a 5-3 win. The Devils also recently played the Blues and dealt them a 7-4 loss.

It was hard to convince myself to take a Rangers over, considering the under hits in a staggering 64% of their games, the best in the league. Igor Shesterkin is an undoubtedly talented goalie, but the Devils have been playing well enough that it’s been tough to rely on them to not score at least a couple goals.

In their last ten games, the Devils have scored an average of 4.20 goals per game and allowed their opponents an average of 4.10. As long as the Devils put a suitable amount of pressure on the Rangers, I don’t see anything that should prevent New York from scoring whatever is needed off of the struggling Jon Gillies. Additionally, over the last month, the Rangers and the Devils have held the first and second-best power plays: 33.3% and 29.6%, respectively.

Thanks to COVID, we got to see these teams play each other eight times last season, and there were an average of 6.75 goals scored per game. Not to mention, eight consecutive New Jersey games have gone over, so I'm hoping we'll see number nine tonight.
