Avalanche vs. Oilers Prediction
Now I have touched on the Edmonton Oilers netminder situation a few times but not recently so I am going to again. It looked awful for a good chunk of time midseason and I believed they were going to need to make a move to get someone else between the pipes if they had playoff aspirations this season. My opinion is unchanged regarding the fact that I do believe getting a guy like Marc-Andre Fleury (there are not many) would have undisputedly been an upgrade from their current situation.
With that said, I do not disagree with what they chose to do in riding with what they have in their current duo. Mikko Koskinen has been playing great the last few months and has earned his seat as the leading man for them. The guys in front of him picked it up and because of their play and his improved form they look good.

McDavid, Draisitil, and Co. can be something really special if they just find that next gear and that next level of chemistry; those two guys are the backbone of this squad and they really can and have been doing great things. I like the way they are playing and I believe they continue to do so, their morale is up as a result of the midseason change of culture with that coaching change and the play from Koskinen has picked them up and they want to support him.
Tonight they are going to need to provide a lot of support.
When he is in net they are fine and luckily for them if they find themselves chasing the cup next month, they can ride their main man every day due to scheduling if he keeps it up. When he is not in net things change and tonight against one of the most offensively potent teams in the national hockey league I think Mike Smith is good to give up three-four with some change if we are lucky. He is 6-8-1 this season with a sub .900 SV% and is sporting a 3.39 GAA.
I have literally maybe only ever said one cheesy thing in an article before but I am going to do it again here with good reason; those boys from Colorado truly come at you like an avalanche. They are putting up around 37 SOG/G and are sporting a 3.84 GAA in all situations this year.
They are one of the most fundamentally sound/well put together teams in the league and despite the fact that he still has a rough outing here and there I like Kempfer in net going into April. With that said, it is march and the postseason means nothing tonight other than the fact that both teams are looking to get their two points.
Colorado should have the edge here on home ice with their number one netminder in net but both squads are more than capable of getting after the other. If Edmonton wants this one I think they have to win a rather high-scoring affair or to choke them out; with Smith in net I am going with the former. I believe Colorado has the horses to win this one on home ice but I expect this one to be very entertaining no matter who takes it in the end.
As always best of luck to all who tail!
