Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes Prediction: Expect Defense to Shine

Tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes play the Washington Capitals for the fourth and final time this season. The books are giving out a great deal on the Caps at +115, especially considering they've already beaten the Hurricanes three times this season.

Capitals vs. Hurricanes Over/Under Movement

Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes Prediction

Last week, we were successfully on the over when these teams faced each other in Carolina, but tonight in Washington, I’m going to take the under 6. We saw this exact goalie matchup in Washington earlier this month, and the Caps beat the Canes 4-0. With luck, tonight’s result patterns itself after the previous matchup in Washington.

Carolina goalie, Frederick Andersen, has a 2.31 GAA on the road this season. Andersen made two starts against the Capitals this season, and while he allowed multiple goals, both games still stayed at six or fewer goals. The Canes are capable of playing great defense, especially behind Andersen. In their last ten games, the Canes have limited opponents to an average of 2.20 goals per game. Seven of the last eight, and 12 of Andersen’s last 16 starts have finished under six.

Washington goalie, Vitek Vanecek, has a 2.47 GAA at home. Vanecek dealt the Canes a shutout in his only appearance against them this season. Admittedly, the Capitals have struggled with a combination of defense and goaltending lately. In their last ten games, the Caps are still 7-2-1, with eight of the last ten games being determined by just one goal. This is a great position for Vanecek to bounce back. To his advantage, the Canes typically aren’t overly aggressive when it comes to scoring. I predict we see a close game here, but hopefully as a result of good defense.
