NHL handicapper Jason Yamaguchi provides his best bet for Wednesday's bout between the Oilers and the Kings.
ANALYSIS

Edmonton Oilers vs. Los Angeles Kings Prediction: Fade the Kings

After a Tuesday slate that saw eight of the league's best teams face off in four potential playoff-series previews, Wednesday's games are a letdown by comparison. That being said, there are still some potential spots of value. Let's dive in.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Los Angeles Kings Prediction

The Edmonton Oilers (37-25-5) sit two points behind the Kings in the standings with a game in hand. Both teams are in playoff spots, but the race is extremely tight in the Western Conference. Edmonton, having lost three games in the last eight days, needs these points badly. They responded to a 9-5 loss against the Flames nicely with a dominant, 6-1 victory over the Coyotes on Monday night. The Oilers have been playing well at even strength over the past couple of months, and will look to build some momentum with another win on Wednesday.

The Kings (36-23-9) have managed to hold onto second place in the Pacific, but they aren't in great form. They've lost three of their last five, including a 6-1 blowout loss to the Kraken on Monday. The main reason for their slide has been a slew of injuries; Drew Doughty, Dustin Brown, Andreas Athanasiou, Blake Lizotte, and others have all missed time. LA's extensive injury list has forced a high number of AHLers into their lineup, an issue that will continue to plague them moving forward.

Another issue that has hurt the Kings has been their subpar special teams play. They have one of the league's worst power plays, a unit that ranks 28th with a conversion rate of just 28th. Their penalty kill isn't much better—it ranks 24th with a kill rate of 75.4%. That could cost them here, facing a PP that boasts two of the league's most elite forwards in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Indeed, Edmonton has converted at a clip of 26.4% on the man-advantage, good for third in the league. That will be problematic for LA if they cannot stay out of the box.

This is truly a bad spot for the Kings. Not only are they banged up and reeling from a terrible loss, but they are traveling to Edmonton for this game, where the Oilers are 21-12 on the year. Edmonton has been playing great hockey lately, despite a couple of blips, and I think that their good form is likely to continue. The moneyline price is a tad bit steep for me in terms of juice, so I'm taking the Oilers to win in regulation.
