The Washington Capitals will face off against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night. NHL handicapper Jason Yamaguchi offers his best bet for the match.
ANALYSIS

Washington Capitals vs Vegas Golden Knights Best Bet: Expect a Strong Showing from the Caps

With 12 teams having already punched their tickets to the NHL playoffs, just four spots remain up for grabs. Three of the teams in action Wednesday are battling for those spots, including the Golden Knights. Vegas is currently sitting four points out of a wildcard spot, making every game a must-win from here on out. They'll host Washington tonight, needing two points to stay alive in the playoff race.

Washington Capitals vs Vegas Golden Knights Prediction

The Capitals (43-23-10) have already clinched a playoff birth, but they are still in the midst of a battle for seeding. With a win tonight, they can pass the Penguins for third place in the Metropolitan division. The Caps are coming off of a 3-2 win over the league-leading Avalanche, and have won six of their last seven games. As one of the league's best road teams, this trip is an enticing opportunity for Washington to gain a foothold in the race for top-three in the Metro.

The Golden Knights (41-31-5) suffered a disappointing, 3-2 loss to the Devils in their last outing, one that may ultimately cost them a playoff berth. Vegas has lost four of their last six; three of those losses came against non-playoff teams. Even if they can find a way to defeat Washington, it may be too little, too late for a team that hasn't missed the playoffs since its inception in 2017.

Washington is fully healthy, a fact that will continue to serve them well as the season wears on. Meanwhile, Vegas continues to be one of the league's more banged-up squads. Some of their roster players have returned from injury in recent days, but others—Reilly Smith, William Carrier, and more—remain out.

The Capitals have improved their special teams, something that may pay off against the Knights. Vegas has just the 25th ranked power play in terms of scoring rate (16.8%) and the 21st ranked penalty kill (77.5% kill rate). Washington, on the other hand, scores on 20.2% of their power plays while killing off 82.1% of their penalties. With four power play goals in their last four games, Washington's PP is a unit to watch heading into a game against a squad with subpar penalty killing.

Vegas does have marginally better goaltending, and both teams have been good (but not great) at even strength this season. Aggregating those factors with everything else, this game should be priced at around a pick-em. If anything, Washington should be slightly favored, especially given their recent form. At the current price, I see them as a significant value on the moneyline.
