Monday NHL Playoffs Picks for Early Games: Panthers vs. Capitals, Rangers vs. Penguins

Well, now we are on to playoff hockey.

Awesome.

Last week I was a bit busy so ran most of our action on the morning edge and on the page but now that I am back to writing articles I gotta tell you guys I am pumped. The first week of the Stanley Cup Playoffs did not disappoint whatsoever, our series futures are shaping up nicely and the best part of it all is we are looking seven more weeks of this down the barrel as just one of the eight opening series will be settled in less than six games.

Playoff hockey is different; this is where handicapping the entire season, analyzing teams play against certain opponents, watching how they adapt, and everything in between comes into effect. This is much less about splits, recent matchups and anything else that matters in the regular season. You are traveling, you play back-to-backs, different opponents; so many of the elements of it all change entirely.

It is a different game.

We’ve been pretty damn hot to start here and I am feeling like these playoffs are going to be far from the opposite of anticlimactic; storylines are everything in playoff hockey and man we have them building all across the league. Every single team that was down 2-1 in their series tied it up yesterday; I expect similar urgency from some squads today.

I handicap all season long so I can feel confident around this time of the year and I am ready to keep this train rolling.

Enough with the prologue, let’s dive in.

Washington Capitals vs Florida Panthers Prediction

If you are the Florida Panthers you have to win this hockey game; if you are the Washington Capitals this is your one opportunity to step on the throat of the Presidents Cup winners, bury them and make this series seem out of reach. This game will be close but I cannot go against this Florida team in a due or die game. Washington has great leadership and have shown they can duel in a playoff setting so I would not go crazy backing Florida but both squads have plenty of motivation to go out and score a lot tonight so that is what I am on.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Rangers Prediction

New York got off to an abysmal start in game three and did everything you cannot do against a hungry, talented Pittsburgh team on home ice in a playoff series. You are down 2-1 now and your backs are against the wall; it is time to see what these New York Rangers are made of.

I think the pace will be high as the Pens do not want to let this team breathe but they are still down to their third-string netminder and the Rangers surged back before giving that game away. Pittsburgh should play this one hard and that is why I think the totals stay hot here but I have to believe New York leads the scoring in this one and evens up the series tonight.
