Colorado Avalanche vs. Edmonton Oilers Game 1 Prediction
The Edmonton Oilers and the Colorado Avalanche will battle it out from the mile-high tonight for game one of this series. The Oilers pulled off a big upset in the eyes of many when they knocked off the Calgary Flames last round. It turned out their tougher round was round one against a pesky LA Kings team. The Oilers will have their toughest task of the season ahead of them in the Colorado Avalanche.
This Avalanche team is one of the best teams the NHL has seen in the past few seasons. Led by young stars in Nathan MacKinnon and Cal Maker, this team is a pure joy to watch. They will turn a non-hockey fan into a fan if you give them a chance.
The issue for both of these teams has been winning the big game, but they both were able to put their demons to bed this year.
The Edmonton Oilers are also one of the most dynamic teams in the NHL, led by reigning MVP in Connor McDavid. This series is filled with star power and should also be filled with a lot of goals if you go by stats. These teams ranked one and two in the league in scoring this season. The Oilers edged out the Avs to lead the league, scoring 4.33 goals per game while the Avs scored 4.30 goals per game. The key in this series will be which defense and goaltender play better. These are two offensive juggernauts that will get theirs on offense.
Tonight I am backing the Avs on the -1 line. I expect the crowd to be fired up tonight and a lot of goals from the Avs in this series, but I am betting Darcy Kemper will be better than Mike Smith in this series.
The Avs are a better defensive team than people give them credit for due to their offense. They ranked ninth in hockey in goals against this year, while Edmonton ranked nineteenth. I give the advantages to Colorado across the board and think they make quick work of Edmonton in this series. The pace that Edmonton wants to play at is the same pace the Avs love to play at, and I would be shocked if the Oilers beat the Avs at their own game.
