Phil Bobbitt beaks down the NASCAR Cup Series Bristol Dirt Food City Race and shares his best bets. Where will Bubba Wallace and Ross Chastain finish?
ANALYSIS

NASCAR Cup Series Bristol Dirt Preview and Best Bets: Food City Dirt Race

We're relatively new to this whole "writing articles" thing, and being in the spotlight. When something gets posted to the internet, it's on there forever. My grandmother always used to tell me, "Never do something you don't want to be on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow." Wise words. She was a fine role model, and also made one whale of a broccoli casserole.

Another person we look up to on Gambling Twitter is OddscheckerUs favorite, @sloprules. He taught us a lot of important lessons along the way. Last weekend, we took William Byron in a head-to-head matchup against Christopher Bell (win), for a top-5 finish (win), and as the outright winner at +1000 (win, nbd). A lesser handicapper would probably want to toot their own horn about what an awesome hit that was. Not us. We wouldn't dream of even patting ourselves on the back for a 10/1 hit. That's why it's important to have mentors.

We look ahead to the Cup Series as they take on Bristol Dirt. Here are our best bets for the Food City Dirt Race.

Risk 1.8u to win 1.5u - Ross Chastain to finish better than Bubba Wallace (-120) (Bet $120 to win $100)

*Odds available at DraftKings at time of publishing*

Ross Chastain first won our hearts in 2019 in the Truck Series when he smashed a watermelon in Victory Lane. It was a unique celebration, to say the least. He kept it going in 2020 as a top-5 mainstay in the Xfinity Series and last year after cashing a steady dose of top-20 plus-money wagers on Draftkings. The @speedwaysteve2 brain trust are known as "melon man" fans. The guy drives like his hair is on fire.

Let the record show that I am not an agricultural scientist, but I did read on the internet that watermelons prefer a sandy loam type of soil. Here's the good news though. Watermelons CAN grow in clay soils. I was happy to read that since we're racing on top of 2,300 truckloads of red clay, and that we're betting on the son of a watermelon farmer.

When racing on a unique surface, oddsmakers don't have a thick notebook of information at their disposal. Whether a driver has dirt racing roots is probably the biggest factor when creating these lines, followed by results on the few various dirt events in the ARCA/Truck/Cup series. Last year, Chastain crashed out of the Bristol Dirt race after only 52 laps. He also didn't come through the ranks as a dirt racing guy. What we do know is that Chastain's Trackhouse Racing teammate, Daniel Suarez, led 58 laps last year here. We also know that Chastain's recent form is arguably the best in NASCAR and that he picked up his first career win a few weeks ago.

Bubba Wallace does have some dirt racing pedigree, winning in the Truck Series at Eldora Speedway held on dirt. Chastain's lack of experience on dirt coupled with Bubba's win a million years ago is the only reason these two are in a head-to-head matchup together. Let's take advantage of it, and submit this winner.

Risk 1.0u to win 1.35u - Austin Dillon to finish inside the Top-10 (+135) (Bet $100 to win $135)

We talked about Dillon's pedigree at length in the truck series article, and think that the added track time will benefit him in this race also. He and his teammate, Tyler Reddick, were both quick in today's practice sessions. Dillon's history on dirt, coupled with running more laps on this unusual surface, should equate to a good result.
