Breeders Cup Picks: Distaff
The seventh Breeders’ Cup race of the day is the $2 million Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff for 3-year-olds and up fillies & mares over 1 1/8 miles. A field of 11 is slated as race 10 with an approximate post time of 6:20 p.m. ET.
#4, Midnight Bisou, Mike Smith, 6-5
Look, there are some solid horses in this field but Midnight Bisou is heads above. She is looking to cap an 8-for-8 season in her 17th straight graded stakes race. She is a perfect 3-for-3 at Santa Anita, winning a G1, a G2 and a G3. In her last start, she was bumped a couple of times out of the gate and still won by 3 ¼ lengths in the G2 Beldame Stakes at Belmont on Sept. 28. And that’s just her last start! If you stop her today, you would have done something special. The pick.
#1, Paradise Woods, Abel Cedillo, 5-1
Paradise Woods is an outstanding 5-3-2 in 12 career starts at Santa Anita. She has won two of her last four, including her last, a 1 ¾ length win over Secret Spice in the G2 Zenyatta Stakes here on Sept. 29. She could be sitting on a big one, especially with the works she has posted during the morning works this week. The underrated Abel Cedillo is aboard. The top two loves this track, should be a great duel. Runner-up.
#9, Serengeti Empress, Flavien Prat, 12-1
This will be her ninth straight graded stakes race, including her fifth straight. No idea what happened in the G1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx, where she finished sixth on Sept. 21. Prior to that, she posted two straight runner-up finishes and captured the G1 Kentucky Oaks on May 3 for her first G1 victory. The always tough Flavien Prat is aboard, who I love. Contender.
#5, Dunbar Road, Jose Ortiz, 6-1
The duo of Chad Brown/Jose Ortiz bring Dunbar Road in to this race, coming off a third-place finish in the G1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 6. She finished behind winner Blue Prize and runner-up Elate, not bad company. Prior to that, she won three straight capped off by a win over Point of Honor and Street Band (also in today’s race) in the G1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 17. Dangerous. In the mix.
