Racing expert Sweet Lou Monaco's picks for the Steve Prather Stakes

Our first trip out to Dobbs, New Mexico brings us to Zia Park for today’s $145,000 Steve Prather Stakes for 2-year-old state-breds over one mile and 70 yards on the dirt. The field of 12 will go to gate for race 9 on the 10-race card with an approximate post time of 5:36 p.m. ET.

#11, Cerveza, Roimes Chirinos, 6-1

Cerveza finished in the top two in three of his last four starts including a win here in an allowance race on Sept. 30. In his last, he finished fourth in the New Mexico Classic Cup Juvenile Championship Stakes on Oct. 27. He is looking for his first stakes win as regular rider Roimes Chirinos takes the mount for the seventh straight time for trainer Todd Fincher, who has a total of four horses in today’s race. Taking a shot. The pick.

#4, Shame On Powers, Miguel Perez, 4-1

This will be Shame On Powers first start going two turns, which could prove to be a factor in his second start here. He comes off a fifth-place finish in the $145,000 New Mexico Cup Juvenile here on Oct. 27, a race which has produced three next-out winners. Prior to his last start, he finished in the money in five of his last six, including four victories. The second-choice morning-line, ridden by Miguel Perez for trainer Cliff Lambert will be my second choice. Runner-up.

#3, On a Warpath, Miguel Fuentes, Jr., 3-1

In three career starts, he has two wins and a second, including his last, a head victory over today’s entrant Ancient Land in an allowance race here on Nov. 27, just 12 days ago. The connections must like something bringing him back so early. Miguel Fuentes, Jr., is in the saddle for trainer Joel Marr. Contender.

#2, Go Now Go, Ry Eikleberry, 15-1

This will be his seventh career start (1-0-3) and is coming off his first career win in his last start, a solid 2 ¼ length win in a maiden special weight race here on Nov. 17. Ry Eikleberry has the mount for another Fincher starter. In the mix.
