Wednesday Racing Picks: Kentucky Downs
John DaSilva previews Wednesday's meet at Kentucky Downs.
Race 1 – Pick #11 Bonita Springs (6-1 ML) - Click here to bet with TV
The opener is a starter that has horses coming from all over for this spot. While the course isn’t tailor made for horses to wire the field, there looks to be a lack of quality pace in the race. That should allow Bonita Springs to go to the front and set relaxed fractio0ns, then hold off the cavalry charge in the long stretch drove for the victory at a price. Bonita Springs gets Shaun Bridgmohan to ride. Trainer Matt Shirer has had an excellent year with limited runners on turf, going 28-8-4-4 this year on turf.
Race 8 – Pick #9 Sentry (9/2 ML) - Click here to bet with TV
Shug McGaughey has always been underrated as a turf trainer, despite having trained multiple Point of Entry and Lure. This year Shug is having his best year ever on turf, being 22 for 84 (26%). He has not been afraid to place horses in the right spot, shipping outside the NYRA circuit if necessary. Here he ships Sentry. Last time out the horse chased the pace, faded back but came on again to be fourth at Saratoga. That was after three consecutive races where he had won two and finished second by a neck. His running style fits Kentucky Downs and gets Javier Castellano to ride.
Race 9 – Pick #5 English Bee (5-1 ML) - Click here to bet with TV
The multiple stakes winner from last year has not had the same success in 2020, but he has been close I recent starts. In the Grade 1 Makers Mark Mile he finished well to be beaten a length. The previous start, the Grade 2 Wise Dan, he just missed by a neck. Now he gets needed class relief into this non winners of a sweepstakes in 2020 condition. James Graham, who was aboard the previous two starts, retains the mount and should get English Bee up in time for the victory.
