Tuesday Racing Picks: Kentucky Downs

The Steve Asmussen trainee was not showing much on dirt so the natural reaction was to drop in class in search of a competitive level. But when Power End switched to turf, the potential that was thought to be non existent came back. He won his first two starts in turf sprints and then ran second going shorter over this course on Labor Day. He comes back eight days later, stretches out while returning at the same level as last start and retains Santana. He could be a good miler on the turf down the road if he can win this spot.

Usually playing maidens in stakes is something that should e avoided. But when Mike Maker, co-leading trainer of the meet and the track’s all time leading trainer makes a move like this, pay attention. Herald Angel, who despite and not so great start, ran second going shorter at Saratoga making her career debut. Maker ships her down, stretches out and runs her versus winners despite the unusual layoff of the turf course. Irad Ortiz Jr., who rode Herald Angel in her debut, retains the mount.

Despite 2020 being a strange year in racing, there have been some bright spots and surprises. One of the biggest ones is jockey Umberto Rispoli. The Italian jockey had been riding in Hong Kong the past few years and came to America over the winter without much fanfare. He quickly adapted to US racing and showed everyone he could be one of the best turf riders in North America. Racing on a turf course like Kentucky Downs should be second hand for Rispoli, wo had ridden on courses like this in Europe. He picks up the mount on Lighthouse, who ran second in the Daisycutter Handicap at Del Mar in June. She was further off the pace that race and now with Rispoli aboard, she should continue that running style and get up in time for the victory.
