John DaSilva guides us through his Thursday picks for Churchill Downs
Race 3 – Pick #4 Distorted Moon (7/2 ML) - Click here to bet with TVG
After showing improved early speed when making two turn debut and finishing third at Ellis Park last out, Distorted Moon two days later was gelded. After making the ultimate equipment change, he probably will show improved early speed as he stretches out here, racing on or close to the pace. He comes in with a bullet work at the training center and Julien Leparoux, who was aboard last time out, retains the mount here.
Race 6 – Pick #11 Midnight Patriot (9/2 ML) - Click here to bet with TVG
With thoroughbred racing taking a break in Louisiana, trainers like Scott Gelner will be shipping to places like Churchill Downs in search of good spots to run at. Midnight Patriot has shown improved results whenever he goes two turns on the dirt. Last time out going one turn seven furlongs at Louisiana Downs, he finished fourth. He finished in the money in his previous three starts going two turns on dirt. While dropping to the lowest claiming level of his career and getting Corey Lanerie to ride, that should be enough to get Midnight Patriot to the winners circle.
Race 7 - #4 Regal Beauty (4-1 ML) - Click here to bet with TVG
After going from the Bob Baffert barn to Bret Calhoun’s, Regal Beauty ran well and had lead in the stretch before tiring to finish in the money in her last two starts. She cuts back in distance to a one turn seven furlong race for her first start at Churchill Downs. If she can get out of the gate cleanly, she should stalk the pace, take over the lead in the stretch and go on to victory. Calhoun wins at 23% with horses going from route to sprint.
