TVG racing expert Emily Shields is back this week with picks for Saturday's races at Woodbine
ANALYSIS

The October 18 card at Woodbine Racetrack is the final blockbuster day of racing for the year at the Toronto track, as the meet winds down for winter. Four stakes races, including a pair of Grade 1 events, highlight the program.

Race 5 - $300,000 Northern Dancer Turf (G1) - Click here to bet with TVG

International runners are not able to compete this year due to pandemic border restrictions, leaving local runners to shine here. #3 Sir Sahib (7-2) has been ultra consistent and although he doesn’t win a lot, with only two scores in 20 tries, he has been top three 13 times. His speed figures have improved over his last few starts for trainer Kevin Attard. Longshot Play: #1 Say the Word (8-1) has been similarly improving with a nice win at Saratoga two back and is a better price. #8 Count Again (2-1) is the winner of the Sinspiel (G3) last out over most of this field.

Race 7 - $600,000 E. P. Taylor Stakes (G1) - Click here to bet with TVG

This stellar field has six of seven entries under 10-1 odds. United States shipper #4 Theodora B. (2-1) is coming off two straight wins, including the Grade 2 Dance Smartly here in August, and most recently the TVG Stakes at Kentucky Downs. Second in the Dance Smartly was #3 Etoile (9-5), who is making her third start in North America for trainer Chad Brown, who is always dangerous on the grass. The price play is #1 Rideforthecause (4-1) who is third choice despite coming off two straight wins on this course for trainer Gail Cox.

Race 9 - $250,000 Nearctic Stakes (G2) - Click here to bet with TVG

#5 Silent Poet (2-1) has been phenomenal in 2020, with three wins in four starts and his lone loss came in Grade 2 company right here at Woodbine. #9 Olympic Runner (4-1) was beaten less than two lengths in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile and although he doesn’t win a lot he is a must use in the top three spots. Longshot Play: #8 City Boy (12-1) is the defending champion and has been rounding back into form of late.

Race 10 - $100,000 Display Stakes - Click here to bet with TVG

#3 Maclean’s Posse (3-1) was a big maiden winner here on debut August 29 for trainer Josie Carroll. #6 Hleium (2-1) scored at first asking for trainer Mark Casse on September 27; these two could throw it down in this seven-furlong race. #8 Souper Classy has drawn outside; Michael DePaulo trains the stakes placed winner.
