Saturday Racing Picks: Woodbine
The condensed 2020 racing season at Woodbine Racetrack is coming to a close, with six stakes races taking place over the weekend. Five of these are graded events.
Saturday, $125,000 Ontario Derby (G3) - Click here to bet with TVG
#6 Mighty Heart (7-2) seems a bit forgotten in this spot despite winning both the Queen’s Plate and Prince of Wales impressively this fall. He ran a lackluster race on the grass in his bid to win the Triple Crown, but returns to a shorter distance and the main track here for trainer Josie Carroll. Stablemate #2 Belichick (5-2) upset him in the Breeders’, winning by four lengths, and is simply getting better with every race. The challenger is shipper #1 Field Pass (2-1), who has won four stakes races this year and been third twice on the grass in Grade 2 company.
Saturday, $175,000 Kennedy Road Stakes (G2) - Click here to bet with TVG
Everyone wants to see #7 Pink Lloyd (7-5) win this race for the third time. He is unbeaten on the season and has won his last 10 starts. Two horses are trying to beat him, including looming #2 Ride a Comet (5-2), who returned off a two-year layoff to win in allowance company here with this best career figure for trainer Mark Casse. #4 Silent Poet (2-1) has won two in a row and four of his last five, including a pair of Grade 2 races, but that was all on the grass and this is the main track.
Saturday, $175,000 Bessarabian Stakes (G2)Â - Click here to bet with TVG
This is an incredibly tough race, so tough that #2 Boardroom (10-1) is quite the price despite being three for four lifetime and coming off an impressive stakes win. Her lone loss is when her equipment broke during the race. #5 Amalfi Coast (7-2) was a cruising winner last out against similar with her best speed figure ever, while #3 Painting (2-1) has been a tough customer her entire career, finishing top three in 10 of 11 starts.
Sunday, $125,000 Grey Stakes (G3)Â - Click here to bet with TVG
#3 Stephen (3-1) was an impressively winner of the Coronation Futurity for trainer Kevin Attard. The son of Constitution has come into his own lately and is dangerous here. Mark Casse’s #7 Helium (2-1) is unbeaten in two starts and is a deserving favorite but stretches out around two turns for the first time. #1 Haddassah is the stablemate of Stephen and could be every bit as good.
Sunday, $125,000 Mazarine Stakes (G3)Â - Click here to bet with TVG
Longshot Play of the Day: #2 Sleek Lynx (8-1) has yet to try the synthetic, but has a bullet workout here on November 1 as the fastest of 77 at the distance. The Casse trainee out of a Grade 1 winner ran in Grade 1 company two back as a maiden, then got the job done last out. #7 Couper Sensational (even) is stretching out after two big wins at seven furlongs and also comes from the Casse barn. Graham Motion ships in #4 Batyah (6-1) from graded competition at Keeneland; this should be a more forgiving spot.
