Tuesday Free Horse Racing Picks: Delta Downs Late Pick Four | March 16 2021
We cashed Monday at Delta Downs with a $6 ticket that had two short-priced singles. While we didn’t get rich, the minimal investment returned $35, and we’ll wheel back a very small percentage of that in Tuesday’s late Pick Four sequence. This ticket has a similar structure, but comes in at $4 for a 50-cent bet, making it an even cheaper play. Here’s how I’ve put it together.
RACE #6:
This is another sequence where, in order for handicappers to make any money at all, a stand needs to be taken against at least one favorite. For me, that stand comes here, as I’m far from sold on #9 MALIBU JACK. He’s 8/5 on the morning line and has run second three times at the meet, but his lone win came on turf at Canterbury for another trainer, and his current conditioner is just 1-for-35 at this stand. Add in a jockey switch away from one of the most respected riders on the circuit, and this one becomes a toss.
I’m going two-deep, using #4 NOT TODAY SATAN and #5 OUACHITA. The former makes his local debut and comes back to dirt, while the latter cuts back to one turn, adds blinkers for a capable barn, and gets the services of Diego Saenz. With that in mind, Ouachita is my top pick, although it certainly seems like he’ll come down off of the 12-1 morning line price.
RACE #7:
This race, however, has a chalk I won’t go against. In fact, I’m singling #4 SIR SMACK in this $5,000 claiming event. He’s won two in a row as an odds-on favorite, and it certainly doesn’t seem like there are any monsters lining up against him. He does make his first start for a new barn, but Eduardo Ramirez does well with new acquisitions, and I simply think Sir Smack is trending the right way and isn’t worth trying to beat.
RACE #8:
The Tuesday feature is an allowance event for state-bred fillies and mares going five furlongs. It’s drawn a group of eight horses, and I’m using half the field.
My top pick may be a bit of a price. #2 CATCAKE responded to a barn switch by running away with a claiming race last time out, and I think this race sets up for a horse with her running style. She should sit just off the pace and be in prime stalking position around the far turn. Given that it seems like there’s a lot of early zip signed on, I think such a journey could be a winning one, and that 10-1 morning line price is very attractive.
#3 DIAL EM IN, #5 NINEONEONEPRAYER, and #6 ITSNOTMYJOB are on my ticket as well. Nineoneoneprayer has a lot of speed and was a decent second at this level, but she’s more of a defensive use for me than anything else. Perhaps she’s just better than this bunch, and she’ll likely be bet as if that’s the case, but I don’t think she’s impossible to beat.
RACE #9:
My second single comes in the Tuesday finale. It’s a $4,000 claimer, and my top pick was very impressive in winning his local debut, which came just last week.
#9 ARCHIE rallied and pulled away to win by four in his first start here at Delta. Some horses really enjoy this bullring track, and I think that’s what we saw. Karl Broberg has made the decision to run him back just eight days after that performance, and I think that’s a sign of confidence. Add in that this doesn’t seem like the strongest race for the level, and I’ll let it ride with the likely favorite in the nightcap to finish off yet another budget-friendly ticket.
