Monday Free Horse Racing Picks: Delta Downs Late Pick Four | March 22 2021
Monday kicks off another week of racing at Delta Downs, and the late Pick Four begins in the seventh of 10 races on the program. I’ll be attacking it with a $16 play, and here’s how I’ve constructed my ticket.
RACE #7:
We’ll start with a $5,000 claiming event for older fillies and mares going one mile. There’s an entry in here that figures to be heavily favored, and I’m using it, but I saw fit to use another runner as well.
#1 PANTERITA and #1A WENEEDTOTALK are both trained by Isai Gonzalez, and both have shown an ability to pass rivals late. This event looks full of early zip, so the race shape should work in both runners’ favor. I give the former a slight edge, especially since she won at this route earlier in the meet, but both can certainly win.
I’ll also use the other closer in the field, #5 KAYDEES IN TOWN. Her last-out effort wasn’t pretty, but her two-back race was fine, and perhaps the stretch-out in distance and the abundance of early speed will set things up for her to return to form at a bit of a price.
RACE #8:
We’ll stay with older fillies and mares going long for the second leg. Once again, Isai Gonzalez has the likely favorite, and I’m using her, but this time, I prefer the likely second choice on top.
#7 DIXIE LOVING has found her form since being stretched out to a mile two starts ago. She was a close-up second two back before dusting a group by more than five lengths earlier this month. Some horses just really like this bullring track. It looks like she’s one of them, and continued improvement would make her a handful.
#1 EBONY BAY, meanwhile, has hit the board in her last eight starts, three of which have come here. She’s been a beaten favorite twice in a row at this condition, but she makes her second start off the claim for Gonzalez and could move forward.
RACE #9:
This time, it’ll be the boys going a mile, and this event has attracted a field of nine Louisiana-bred geldings. The favorite looks imposing on the drop in class for powerhouse connections, but there’s a long shot that hits me as a must-use at or near his morning line price.
#9 IMDUSTY didn’t do much running last time out, but he’s since moved to the barn of Karl Broberg, who’s running away with the race for the trainer’s title this meet. He stretches back out to a mile, gets top local jockey Tim Thornton, and the outside draw should give horse and rider plenty of options.
The big price I’m using is #7 COMMON LAW CAT. The last-out effort was far from strong, but the races he ran two, three, and five back at this distance were very competitive. Regular rider Ashley Broussard comes back aboard after missing this one’s last start, and he’s got enough tactical speed to sit fairly close to the pace. He could have first run on the pace-setters, and those 15-1 odds sure look attractive.
RACE #10:
We’ll finish things off with a maiden claimer, a race that I thought was the most wide-open of the sequence. I went four-deep, and hopefully I’ve used enough horses to get me into the cashing line once the race goes official.
I’m using #6 BEAUTIFUL ENDING, the morning line choice, but my top pick is #10 SWEET PERFECTION. She’s hit the board twice in two starts at this route this meet, and repeats of either effort could get her into the winner’s circle for the first time. Her clunker last time out came going one turn, and I think two turns is far more up her street.
I’ll also use #8 RACELYNN and #9 ORTHODOX BEAT. The former has shown some early speed and hasn’t been out of place in two starts at this level, while the latter has run second three straight times and may not need a lot more to go right in order to get the money this time around.
