Andrew Champagne previews is back for Tuesday's meet at Delta Downs and has the Late Pick Four covered for us.
ANALYSIS

We’ll head to Delta Downs for Tuesday’s late Pick Four, which begins in the seventh of 10 races on the Tuesday program. It’s a fun sequence, one I’ll take a $16 stab at with a “separator single” right off the rip. Here’s how I’ve constructed my ticket.

RACE #7:

This is a claiming race for non-winners of two, and I’m just not sold on the runners with tries at this level. #7 CHICKEN OR THE EGG is 7/5 on the morning line, and I just cannot endorse her at that price.

#3 FURTHER LANE may get bet down from the 6-1 morning line given her connections, but I still think she’ll go off at an overlaid price. Her first start at Delta was very good, as she thrashed a field of maiden claimers by more than five lengths. Her career record looks far better if you toss the two-back clunker on turf at Sam Houston, and while this is her first try against winners, it’s not like she’ll face any monsters here. I’m singling her, as I think she’s well-meant and this trainer/jockey combination has won pretty much everything in sight at this stand.

RACE #8:

Older sprinters will go five furlongs in the second leg. #3 WARRIORS GEM may be a pretty heavy favorite in his local debut, and I’m certainly using him, but there were two others I found fit to include as well.

#8 POPULIST returns to Delta for the first time in a while, and he has a win over this track. At least two of his prior outings here were going two turns, and I don’t think that’s what he wants to do. He’s run well in his last three starts, which were all sprints at Fair Grounds, and Diego Saenz sees fit to ride for a barn that means business when it runs here.

I’ll also throw in #6 ELUSIVE D’ORO, who’s been running over his head against far better in each of his last two outings. He returns to a spot far closer to his ideal level, and a repeat of his three or four-back effort would put him right in the mix.

RACE #9:

We’ve got an overflow field for this one, as a full field of 10 is set to go with two also-eligibles waiting in the wings. I’m going two-deep, and while the likely favorite merits respect, there’s a bigger price that I feel merits consideration as well.

#6 GLORY ROAD ran well in his local debut, when he was a strong second in a swiftly-run allowance race. He’s spent most of his career running into stakes-quality horses on their ways up the class ladder, and this is an appropriate spot. Tim Thornton sees fit to ride him back when he almost certainly had other options, and he makes a lot of sense.

#8 GIANT MESA, though, hasn’t done much wrong this meet. He’s hit the board in all three of his starts since shipping in, and he’s shown a bit more tactical speed in his last several outings. His last two recorded works look sharp, he may be fresh off a break of a bit more than two months, and that 8-1 price is certainly attractive.

RACE #10:

We finish things off with a real handicapping puzzle. This maiden claiming event has 10 horses and nine betting interests, and I’m using six of those interests on my ticket.

#4 NOON’S BABYGIRL is the favorite, but she’s been off for three months after a flop as the 3/5 favorite in a race contested at this route. I’m using her defensively, and if forced to give a top pick, I’d go with #9 CAMP HALO. She’s run well at this route three times this meet, and she’s shown she doesn’t necessarily need the lead in order to run well.

#1 PEACEFUL VISION/#1A RESPOSADO, #2 SPECTACULAR IZZY, #3 MISS HURRYUPNWAIT, and #5 EVE’S DELIGHT are also on my ticket. Ultimately, the only runners I didn’t want any part of in here were the first-time starters, and I’m hoping one of them doesn’t jump up and bite me at a big price.
