Golden Gate Predictions - Friday's Late Pick Four Picks

Friday’s late Pick Four at Golden Gate Fields is absolutely worth a look. While the small fields may provide a subpar first impression, I think there’s room for a nice score on a budget-friendly ticket. I’ve got a $13.50 play that throws out a horse which may go off as an odds-on favorite, so if I hit, I’ll stand a chance at a substantial payday. Here’s how I’m attacking the sequence…

RACE #5

While I’m tossing one prohibitive favorite, the likely short price in this starter allowance event is my most likely winner of the sequence. That’s #3 HONEYMOONZ OVER, who looked great in dusting a similar group earlier this month. He sure seems like the speed of the speed, Kyle Frey rides back for trainer Blaine Wright, and if he’s ready to roll, this field will have him to catch. He’s a single for me, and I’m hoping for a repeat performance.

RACE #6

We’ll head to the turf for this one, an optional claiming race that’s drawn a six-horse field. I’m using half of the runners, but that half does not include 9/5 morning line choice #4 KING OF SPEED. I simply think he’s far better on synthetic than he is on the main track, and the fact that he boasts just one win in his last 12 starts is a big red flag. If he wins, he’ll beat me doing it.

I prefer the likely second choice, #3 AMERICAN FARMER. His last win came at this route of ground last summer in a minor stakes race, and I think he’ll relish a return to the lawn. He certainly needs a pace to develop in front of him, but I think he’ll get one given that the three runners to his outside all have some early zip.

I’ll also use two bigger prices. #1 NOWHERE MAN is 7-for-19 over this turf course and figures to be flying late, while #6 SACRED RIDER has four top-two finishes in five local turf starts and is another that could benefit from a surface switch.

RACE #7

Here’s where we’ll hopefully have some fun. #8 SUGAR PICKEL ships up from Santa Anita and takes a gigantic drop in class. Perhaps she’s good enough to get the money here, but I’m chucking her out completely. Her only win to date has come against maiden claimers over a wet track at Los Alamitos, and she’s never run on a synthetic surface before. These are the horses sharp handicappers try to beat, because when they lose, payoff potential goes way up.

I’ll take a shot with #3 CUTETIP, who has shown speed since going to the barn of Steve Sherman. She went wire-to-wire two starts back and set a very fast pace last time out. I don’t think she’ll have to go quite as quickly here, and if she’s left alone up front, I think she’ll stand a big chance.

#1 TIM’S STREET GIRL and #4 GOOD TIME DOLLY are on my ticket as well. The former has taken significant steps forward in her last two and was a good second at this level last time out despite a wide trip, while the latter takes a pretty significant drop for a 23% barn and could sit an ideal stalking trip.

RACE #8

We’ll finish things off with a claimer on the grass. Trainer Jonathan Wong has a pair in here, and I’m using both in addition to one other runner.

#5 HONOS MAN is the Wong trainee that may take the most money. He was second in an off-the-turf race at this level last month and has downstate form that would crush this bunch. However, he’s failed twice at odds-on since coming to Golden Gate, and if this one is going to be that tough, why does Wong also saddle #6 PERFECT WAGER, another who’s run well in turf races on the SoCal circuit? Honos Man may be good enough, but I need to use both.

I also have to use #7 LORD WIMBORNE, who makes his first start for Steve Miyadi. He’s winless since 2019, which obviously isn’t ideal, but he just missed against open $16,000 claimers and drops in to face a restricted $12,500 claiming group here. A repeat of the last-out effort may very well be good enough to allow him to break that drought in the Friday finale.
