England vs. Denmark Prediction: EURO 2020 Odds & Picks
A second major tournament semi-final in three years represents genuine progress for England under Gareth Southgate, but the Three Lions aren’t content with merely being one of the final four at Euro 2020. Indeed, England are targeting their first piece of major silverware since the 1966 World Cup.
First, though, England must get past Denmark who have real momentum behind them. Kasper Hjulmand’s side have overcome the psychological and footballing loss of Christian Eriksen who suffered a cardiac arrest in their opening group game to prove themselves as an exceptional soccer team. Here are some tips and predictions for England v Denmark on Wednesday July 7.
England vs Denmark Prediction
While Southgate faced questions over his conservative approach earlier in the tournament, he achieved vindication in the last 16 win over Germany and the 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine in the quarter finals. England, whose individual talent has never been in doubt, have lived up to their billing as one of the favourites to win Euro 2020.
England have kept five straight clean sheets as Southgate has built his team on a solid defensive foundation with Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice as the anchoring fair in the centre of the pitch. Many have implored Southgate to drop one of them to inject more creativity into his team, but it’s this structure that has sustained England as challengers at Euro 2020.
Hjulmand changed the approach of his Denmark team after the events of their first game at the tournament, with Mikkel Damsgaard stepping into Eriksen’s shoes to provide some much-needed goal threat and creativity from midfield. The switch to a back three with wing backs has made the best use of Denmark’s squad.
Denmark have scored two or more goals in two of their last three matches, but England will be the toughest defensive unit they have come up against at Euro 2020. It’s possible Southgate could match up to Denmark’s back three with a similar system of his own, just as he did against Germany in the round of 16.
Southgate has a number of big decisions to make. Bukayo Saka is fit again after missing the win over Ukraine through injury, but does the Arsenal winger deserve to start over Jadon Sancho? Or Jack Grealish for that matter? Will Mason Mount keep his place in the team or will a switch to a back three cost him? No matter the approach, England have options.
