Liverpool vs Man City Picks, Predictions, Odds: Expect Action in the FA Community Shield

Liverpool takes on Man City for the English FA Community Shield Saturday afternoon. Is this match going to be entertaining? Alex Campean answers.

Liverpool vs. Man City Start Time and Where to Watch

When: Saturday, July 30

Time: 12:00 pm ET

Where to Watch: ESPN+

Liverpool

The two Premier League title favorites meet in the Community Shield on Saturday as league champions Manchester City take on FA Cup winners Liverpool at the King Power Stadium in Leicester as Wembley will be unavailable on the weekend, hosting the Women’s Euro 2022 final between England and Germany the day after.

Just one point separated the two sides at the top of the Premier League table with City managing to hold off a spirited fightback from Liverpool in the second half of the season to win the title. Jurgen Klopp knows how important is to kick off a new season with silverware and is expected to name a strong starting lineup.

Liverpool scored 94 goals in their 38 matches in the Premier League last season, only five goals behind Pep Guardiola's champions Manchester City with Mo Salah winning the EPL Golden Boot with 23 goals. They lost Sadio Mane in the summer transfer window, who signed with Bayern Munich. Replacing him with inexperienced Darwin Nunez might come back to haunt them but Jurgen Klopp is one of the best managers in Europe and one of his most important skills is the fact that he doesn’t need much time to integrate new players. On top of that, Liverpool is fully packed with world-class players with a lot of experience.

The Reds have been scoring goals for fun but they have missed a whole host of chances, which is a concern when it comes to these types of games against big clubs like City, who just don't give up many big opportunities. The last seven meetings between the two giants have seen 28 goals and given the vast array of attacking talent on display at King Power Stadium this weekend, we expect another high-scoring affair.

Man City

City was involved in the Community Shield last season and they lost out 1-0 to Leicester City as boss Pep Guardiola named an experimental starting lineup. He will definitely not have the same approach against Liverpool and he might take the game a little more seriously. Erling Haaland will definitely make his debut for the ‘visitors’ and he will be eager to show his world-class talent.

There has been only one clean by either team in the last nine matches and this fixture so the goals’ market is the way to go. The Citizens are still struggling to take the final step in the Champions League, but they remain the team to beat domestically. They now have a real striker so the sky is the limit for Guardiola and Co.

Pep Guardiola believes winning the Community Shield would provide a great boost ahead of the regular season and will benefit the new recruits.

Liverpool vs. Man City Prediction

It can be tough to predict the outcome of Community Shield matches because much depends on the fitness levels of the two teams but also on the starting lineups. The Community Shield fixtures are generally low-scoring affairs and each of the last five has gone under 2.5 goals. But, as we previously mentioned the two teams have scored in the last five clashes between them.

Liverpool will probably be more motivated on Saturday and they are priced at +190 to lift the trophy in regular time. Klopp has confirmed that Alisson and Diogo Jota won’t be available for this clash. The Community Shield will be Liverpool’s fifth in a six-game pre-season, which has taken in stops in Thailand, Singapore, Germany, and Austria. Man City has only played twice, both on their tour of the United States, beating Club America in Houston and Bayern Munich in Green Bay.

Liverpool vs Man City Pick

Pick: Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals in the match at +100 (Bet $100 to win $100)
