Wednesday Champions League Picks
1u - Atletico @ +121
- There have been under 2.5 goals in Atletico's last 3 UCL games
Salzburg's biggest problem as they come into this game is that they've conceeded too many goals this season in Europe. In 5 games they've given up 15 goals, and that average of 3 could easily be matched in this game, especially given that the Red Bull need to attack in order to get the 3 points they need to progress. Atletico Madrid have grown as a team this year and Joao Felix might be the best player in Europe currently. Whenever you watch him play it's clear that he's become Madrid's talisman, quite a change from the player we saw last season, who looked out of his depth at times. I think Atletico win here and win with ease.
1u - Draw @ +525
- Inter have conceeded 2+ goals in 5 of their last 6 Champions League games
Shakhtar sit second in the table here and will be trying to keep things tight against Inter, who sit bottom of the group, but can still qualify. The Ukranians are better than many believe, and have beaten Real Madrid twice and drew in the first game against Inter. They've been at their best when they've set up defensively against 'bigger' teams and taken advantage on the counter. They should be in that position here and they know what it takes to stifle the Italians.
1u - Gladbach @ +450
- Real Madrid have conceeded at least 2 goals in 6 of their last 7 Champions League games
Group B has been the most interesting group this year with Real Madrid and Inter Milan, clear favorites, struggling to secure qualification to the next round, while Shakhtar and Gladbach cause a few upsets. I think there may be one more shock left to come in this group and that's the Germans beating Real Madrid. At +450 there is such huge value on Gladbach, they top the group and have scored 16 goals and conceeded just 7. Real Madrid meanwhile are third in the group, having scored and conceeded 9 goals. What's concerning for Real Madrid is the bad results against Shakhtar, a so-called lesser team. They've struggled in Europe, much like they've failed to perform in La Liga this season, and they're ripe to be picked off here by the young, talented Gladbach team. Am I certain that Gladbach win? No, I'm not, but like the draw above, it's the clear value play here.
