In my preview for Real Madrid vs. Liverpool I mentioned that the game could almost act like an audition for Mohamed Salah who has long been linked with Real. That's something that feels even more valid in this game with Man City likely to be amongst the front runners looking to sign Erling Haaland this summer to replace the outgoing Sergio Aguero.
Erling Haaland is, for me, the best young player in the world. Despite a lot of discussion about Mbappe and Haaland being the next Ronaldo and Messi, it feels like Haaland, despite Mbappe's impressive collection of trophies, is destined for true greatness. Despite all of that though, he's going to find it very hard today against Manchester City, who are the best team that he's faced all season, marginally better than Bayern Munich.
Man City have only conceeded 21 goals in the Premier League this season and have looked dominant in Europe so far. They're rightly the favorites for the competition and the Stones and Dias partnership at the back looks so strong, with Dias looking like he might be one of the Europe's best defenders. Despite Haaland's ability in front of goal it's going to be tough for him without Jadon Sancho playing. Playing in the Bundesliga has likely led to Sancho's reputation on the world stage being lower than it should be, with some experts suggesting he shouldn't even be in the England squad for Euro 2020. They are wrong. He's an incredible talent and despite a poor period of form before Christmas he's been lights out since. Even in a season with a slow start, he's seen 9 assists and 6 goals in just 21 league games. His ability to run with the ball and help the transition from defense to attack is unmatched and Dortmund will really miss that ability. It's especially sad for Sancho who'd have been keen to show his old club what they were missing.
With Sancho and Axel Witsel missing there are going to be some problems for Dortmund against City and I simply can't see the German side being able to compete against a superior side, with better coaching and talent. Dortmund have only won one of their last 5 games including a 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday and I can't seem not adding another here. Take City and take a small handicap to find some value in the price.
