Monaco vs. Shakhtar Donetsk Prediction

Monaco host Shakhtar on Tuesday for the 1st leg of their UCL playoff round. Who wins this double-legged tie will earn a group spot and perform in the most important European club competition.

In the previous round, Monaco knocked-out Sparta Prague, beating them 5-1 on aggregate while Shakhtar beat Genk 4-2 over two legs to make it this far.

Both teams already kicked-off their domestic campaigns. Monaco dropped 5 points in their 1st two Ligue 1 games, scoring just 1 goal in the process. Despite controlling both matches, creating a huge number of scoring opportunities and having the ball for 75% and 72% of the time respectively, they were kept to a 1-1 draw in the 1st round by Monaco, losing the 2nd round clash on the road against Lorient.

On the other side, Shakhtar have a new manager this season. Former Sassuolo coach, Roberto De Zerbi signed with the Ukrainian side for 3 years. Shakhtar reached the Europa League semi-final in 2020 dominating their domestic league for 4 seasons in a row. The visitors kicked-off the Ukrainian Premier League with 3 wins and 1 defeat sitting 3rd in the standings with 9 points.

Both teams are playing a high-paced football no matter their opponents. They both like to attack, control the ball and create many scoring opportunities. Nicknamed the ‘Brazilian colony’ Shakhtar’s scouting network plays a large part in their success over the past years.

Sassuolo was a great team to watch under De Zerbi and we expect his to have the same attacking approach, pressing high and try to recover the ball in the opponent half. Both teams struggle to keep clean sheets but they both have good scoring runs being packed with attacking players who can solve a match on their own.

It’s very important to know that in the attempt to liven up a two-legged tie, UEFA announced they abolished the much debated ‘away-goal’ rule. From now on, if the aggregate score is level the 2 teams will play extra-time.

1st Champions League Parlay Pick: Over 2.5 goals at -125 with Draftkings

Red Bull Salzburg vs. Brondby Prediction

Brondby qualified for this round of the competition by winning the Danish Superliga last term. Unfortunately, the start of this season saw them drop 10 points in 5 games, being winless so far this term, sitting 10th in the standings (from 12 teams). This will be Brondby's first Champions League fixture of any kind since 2005.

Brondby will be without Christian Cappis, Mathias Greve, Tobias Borkeeiet and Thomas Mikkelsen, as all four players have recently tested positive for coronavirus.

After 3 league-cup double and 8 league-title in a row for Salzburg, Jesse Marsch joined sister club, RB Leipzig, replacing Julian Nagelsmann. The 33-year-old Matthias Jaissle took over signing with Salzburg until 2024. His employment may have raised some eyebrows, but it looks like Salzburg continue to have the same positive style. They kicked-off their domestic league in style winning all 4 games scoring 12 goals in the process and conceding just 2.

They lost 2 important players, selling Patson Daka to Leicester for $40m and Enock Mwepu to Brighton for $30m but they have many young and talented players ready to replace them and become the next big transfers.

We expect a one-sided game with Salzburg trying to solve the qualification issue from the 1st leg. The hosts will try to make a good impression in Champions League and exit the group qualifying in the knock-out stages, something they failed in the past 2 season. The Danish side have not played in the group stage of the Champions League since 1998-99 and we don’t expect them to pull off the upset this time around.

Salzburg are priced at -500 with BetMGM, no value for our parlay bet. We expect a strong start from Salzburg, and we believe they will win this fixture by half-time.
