Champions League Round 1 Betting Picks: Tuesday’s Parlay at +165
The most important European competition is back, so get ready for entertainment, drama, incredible goals, upsets, and superb atmosphere in the stands. Every Tuesday and Wednesday for the entire UCL season, we will share a 2-team parlay.
Young Boys vs. Manchester United
Young Boys won the Swiss Super League last season, but it wasn’t enough to qualify in the Champions League group stage automatically. It was a long summer for the Swiss outfit as they’ve already played six UCL qualifying games, knocking out one by one Slovan Bratislava, CFR Cluj, and Ferencvaros in double-legged ties.
Games featuring Young Boys are always highly entertaining ones with high scoring being a real hallmark. They’re scoring goals for fun, but they are also conceding. We’ve seen at least 3 goals on the scoreboard in five of their previous six fixtures across all competitions. They possess great pace, and they are packed with talented players with great potential from the middle and up. Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu, Meschack Elia, and Jordan Siebatcheu form a great attacking trio, but they are still inexperienced at this level.
On the other side, Man United enter this game off the back of a 4-1 win over Newcastle in the Premier League with Cristiano Ronaldo shining in his second debut, scoring a brace, giving him the chance to stage his trademark celebration in front of United’s fans.
After finishing 2nd last year and reaching the Europa League final, they’ve added CR7, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to their squad. As a result, the expectations are even higher this term. They are joint EPL leaders with 10 points earned in 4 rounds, they have the joint best attack with 11 goals netted, and we all expect them to kick off their Champions League campaign with a comfortable win.
The good thing about this fixture is that Young Boys struggle badly at the back as they are an attacking team with a positive attitude on the pitch. They might have a defensive approach, but not because they are planning to do that but because Man United will dominate possession. They will be without the services of some of their most important players: midfielder Fabian Lustenberger and forward Jean-Pierre Nsame, while left-back Jordan Lefort is doubtful.
Probably Man United will cover the -1.5 Asian Handicap but let’s not risk that. We’re going with the goals market as we expect the Red Devils to cover this line on their own.
1st Leg of Parlay: Over 2.5 goals (-175)
Chelsea vs. Zenit St. Petersburg
The Champions League reigning champions kick-off their 2021/22 campaign against an opponent they’ve never met before. Chelsea is flying high in Premier League, having a great start to their season. In four games, they conceded just once, against Liverpool, from a penalty kick. Their three wins (Crystal Palace, Arsenal, and Aston Villa) all came from halftime.
They are the most consistent team in Europe in 2021, and they possess a world-class squad ready to fight once again for the Champions League trophy. In the first fifteen games under Thomas Tuchel, it was all about defensive organization and creating a wall, reducing the volume of shots and counter-attacking shots they were giving up. After that, their attack started to gel too, and by signing the Serie A MVP, Romelu Lukaku, they added even more firepower. They are always in win-now mode, pressing high from the 1st minute of the game and trying to solve the match as soon as possible. This is why we expect them to win many games from halftime this season.
On the other side, Zenit kicked off their domestic campaign with five wins and two draws, and they are sitting 1st in the Russia Premier League standings. Last year, their UCL campaign was very poor. With one draw, five defeats, and 13 goals conceded in the process, they finished last in their group (Dortmund, Lazio, Club Brugge). They lost their three road games, two of them from halftime. We expect a clear win from Chelsea, and we like two betting options. Chelsea to win by at least two goals. So for a single bet Chelsea Asian Handicap -1.5 (-139), and for this parlay, we go with Chelsea halftime/full-time.
