Superb Salzburg managed to qualify in the Champions League knock-out stages after finishing second in Group G behind Lille but on top of Sevilla and Wolfsburg. They picked up 10 points in six games scoring eight goals in the process. Their German striker Karim Adeyemi scored three and offered one assist. has insisted that nothing has been decided regarding his summer move as he continues to be strongly linked with Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year-old has scored 18 goals in 29 outings this season across all competitions.
Salzburg isn't exactly a surprise package in the European competitions as this is their third consecutive season in the Champions League, but this is the first time they are reaching UCL’s knock-out stages. Unfortunately, their lack of competitive games will probably be one of the main keys to this double-legged tie. The Austrian Bundesliga took a two-month break with Salzburg playing just two games since mid-December, a cup game against LASK and a domestic league game against Rapid Vienna. They won both fixtures scoring five goals in the process.
The draw was not kind to Salzburg as they are taking on Bayern Munich, the 2020 UCL champions and one of the best teams in the European top five leagues. Salzburg will be hoping to include Jerome Onguene on Wednesday after his late return from the Africa Cup of Nations where he helped hosts Cameroon to finish third. Unfortunately, they will be without Bernardo, Zlato Junuzovic, and Sekou Koita, while Benjamin Sesko is doubtful.
We don’t expect them to pull off the upset and qualify further in the competition and sadly they will probably lose both legs against the Bavarian giants. Still, they are one of the teams to watch as they are playing attacking football, going all-in in every single game. It’s important to note that they became the first Austrian team in the Champions League history to reach the knock-out stages. They won only one of their previous six mutual encounters against German opposition.
Bayern booked their UCL knock-out stages’ tickets with a perfect 6-0-0 in the group stages. They picked up maximum points in six games having the best attack of the season with 22 goals scored in the process. Surprisingly, Robert Lewandowski is not leading the Champions League top scorers’ chart because Ajax’s Sebastien Haller scored one goal more than him (10). Still, he’s favorited to win the UCL Golden Boot because the bookies are expecting him to have a deep tournament together with Bayern Munich.
The Bavarians have had minor setbacks once in a while this term. This time they got destroyed by the mighty Bochum, who won three crucial points in their quest to avoid relegation. Let’s not forget that Bochum got promoted last summer so Bayern’s 4-2 defeat is a major upset. Bayern are heavy favorites to return to winning ways and beat Salzburg and we expect them to come out on top. They always deliver after getting beat. The Bavarian giants also beat Salzburg in both meetings last season, winning 6-2 away and 3-1 at home.
Bayern conceded in four from their previous five Bundesliga fixtures, losing two in the process. They scored at least twice in nine of their last 10 games and we’ve seen at least four goals on the scoreboard in six of their last seven games. They also have the best attack in the German top-flight league with 70 goals netted in just 22 games (3.18 goals scored per game).
They will be without first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the next three to five weeks after he underwent knee surgery earlier this month. Alphonso Davies is still recovering from myocarditis while Leon Goretzka and Jamal Musiala are also ruled out.
Goretzka has established himself as a solid holding midfielder and without him, Bayern will have problems with holding Salzburg at bay. This should be the highest-scoring match of the Champions League week so we’re avoiding the winners’ market because over 3.5 goals in the match should be an easy winner.
