Euro 2020 Odds: France vs. Germany
France are strong favorites to add Euro 2020 to the World Cup trophy that they won in Russia in 2018. They've been picked as winners by pretty much everyone around and in total honesty that is entirely justified.
Germany meanwhile may be high in the betting but there haven't been many experts suggesting that they're likely to reach the final at London's Wembley Stadium, let alone win it. The common theory is that it's Joachim Low has gone on for one tournament too long as the head coach of Germany and if you've watched them since Russia, or even during that World Cup, you can see where that's coming from. After their failure in Russia an angry Low sidelined some of that generations best players, such as Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels, who'd be so integral to Germany's triumphs before.
Those players are now back in the squad, their form, particuarly that of Thomas Muller, was too good for Low to ignore, although it's an admission that his decision to jettison them was wrong. The young guard didn't take the leap forward that Low wanted and expected and he has needed their old and experienced heads to return. This team still feels like one that's seen it's best days already but they're still dangerous and need to be respected.
So if Germany are to win, then how will they beat France? At this point it feels like the only people who can beat France are the French themselves and reports of disharmony between Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud will be music to the ears for those who want anybody besides Les Blues to win Euro 2020.
It's certainly not ideal that star man Kylian Mbappe is taking a dressing room bustup into the public arena but with a squad as strong, as experienced and as dynamic as this France squad, I don't think it'll matter, at least not now. When the pressure is on later in the tournament we may see cracks appear.
If Low doesn't manage to convince Joshua Kimmich to move to rightback then I fear that Germany could be beaten heavily here, but as it stands it's hoped that the Bayern Munich star will play there, albeit unhappily. Kimmich is better in midfield but such are the options there, and the lack of them on the right side of the backline, that moving makes sense, especially when his nous will be against Kylian Mbappe who can, and would, tear a lesser defender apart.
When it comes down to a wager it's hard to just back France to win here, odds of +170 don't come around often for a team like this and their quality on and off the ball is key. We've seen what N'Golo Kante can do as Chelsea won the Champions League and with him playing as well as he ever has, his engine and his drive, through the aging German midfield, will create problems, that the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba can exploit.
