Euro 2020 Odds: Portugal vs. Germany
We're back with another game from the 'group of death', which should, if we're honest, be renamed the 'group of likely survival'. With Portugal already on three points, and the Germans playing Hungary in the final game, you'd probably be fairly confident that both of these sides should still make it through, but that doesn't make it any less important to get points on the board in this game.
Portugal dominated their match against Hungary but couldn't find their way through the Hungarian backline until the 84th minute when a cruel deflection helped Raphael Guerreiro find the net. Portugal, or more accurately, Cristiano Ronaldo, then added another two goals to leave the final score at 3-0. In some ways 3-0 flattered Portugal given that they only scored the first so late, but at the same time it felt fair given they'd dominated the game.
Portugal have been a very popular pick to win Euro 2020 but given their first performance they likely aren't amongst the frontrunners. As talented as their squad is, packed to the brim with incredible attacking talent, they look more like a collection of great players than a team. These are early days though and we saw similar from Portugal when they won the tournament in 2016, so we can't rule them out yet.
Germany however looked exactly like we expected they would against France. They're still capable of great moments but it's a team on the decline and a shadow of that side who lit up the World Cup in 2014. France only won 1-0 and Germany did have chances to level it in the final few minutes, but it always felt like France were in first gear, and were ready and willing to accelerate if needed.
For Germany they'll look to do more of the same, use Joshua Kimmich's incredible range of passing and the pace and guile of their attack, to find holes in and around Pepe and Ruben Dias. I'd like to see them give Timo Werner a chance and could see his movement being an issue for Portugal, but it seems unlikely that he'll start. I think Germany will get off the mark for the tournament in this game and it'll be interesting to see how the Portugal backline looks against better opposition.
I'm not convinced in Germany's ability to keep Portugal out though. Mats Hummels has had a fantastic career but he was never blessed with pace and as he's aged it's become more and more of an achilles heel. He'll be a real liability against Portugal, who may not be blessed with immense physical speed but who have passing range and ability to highlight his lack of speed.
The main man for Portugal will of course be Ronaldo. Before the tournament I wondered how Ronaldo would perform at Euro 2020. His movement in particular, wasn't great when I'd seen Juventus last season but against Hungary he looked like the old Ronaldo. We've not seen him run and take on defenders so well in years and it appeared like he'd been saving himself for this tournament and another chance to showcase his greatness.
I think a draw between these two teams seems the most likely result and with goals surely on the way I've backed a score draw at odds of +375.
