Can the USWNT pick it up in the Knockout Statge? Picks and predictions for Friday morning's USA vs. Netherlands quarterfinal.

Women’s Olympic Soccer Picks: USA vs. Netherlands Predictions

If the United States Women’s National Team is going to come home with a gold medal, as they were favored to do, they’ll need to start playing much better than what we saw in Group G play. That starts on Friday morning against Netherlands in the 2021 Olympics quarterfinals.

The United States finished 1-1-1 in the Group Stage, good for second in Group G. So rather than playing Japan, who they would have faced in the quarterfinals had they won their group, the USWNT takes on the No. 4 team in the world, Netherlands.

Any USA vs. Netherlands prediction you see will be sure to mention that the last time these two played in major international competiton was in the 2019 World Cup Final. Team USA won that match, but that was two years ago and the USWNT has looked like a shell of itself at the 2021 Olympics.

So, I’ll give you my USA vs. Netherlands predictions and picks for Friday morning’s game, a game that could see the USWNT headed home early for the second straight Olympics.

USA vs. Netherlands Predictions

Team USA has had a bunch of different issues at the 2021 Olympics so far. For starters, their back line has been extremely vulnerable. Their 3-0 loss to Sweden was bad, but the game against New Zealand may have been even worse. Allowing a team like New Zealand to score and have plenty of other chances is unacceptable for a team like the USWNT, looking for gold.

They’ve also been killed by offside calls. I think they had four goals disallowed against New Zealand thanks to offsides infractions. I’ll cut Alex Morgan some slack for her goal being disallowed because her shoulder (?) was a half centimeter in front of the last defender against Australia, but either way the USWNT needs to be more polished.

Netherlands will be the best team that USA has played at these Olympics. They’re more talented than Sweden and will be a tougher test. Vivianne Miedema may very well be the best player in the world right now at age 25. The Arsenal forward is dangerous and will surely give the US defense fits. She scored an insane eight goals in the team’s first three games at the Olympics.

Make no mistake about it, the United States is the more talented team. They’re the No. 1 team in the world for a reason and while I’ve been largely unimpressed with them so far I do think they find a way to win on Friday morning.

Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe get all the headlines, but Rose Lavelle, Julie Ertz, Crystal Dunn, Sam Mewis and Lindsey Horan are what truly makes this team special.

We saw Netherlands struggle to keep Brazil off the board because of the Brazilian team’s pace and I think that sets up beautifully for Crystal Dunn to have a massive game. Add Lavelle and Ertz to the list of pacey midfielders the US can use to pick apart Netherlands and I see something like a 3-1 win for the United States.

So, I’m backing the USWNT on the moneyline at plus odds and I’m hammering the over 3.5 goals. There is too much talent on this field to see a lack of goals.
